Smith & Wesson waited 170 years to build another lever gun, and the Model 1854 shows they were paying attention the whole time. This version pairs the big, easygoing .45 Colt cartridge with a 19.25 inch stainless barrel and a forged stainless receiver, wrapped in a black synthetic stock and forend that shrug off weather the way walnut never could. At 36 inches overall and around 6.8 pounds, it carries easily in a truck, on a four wheeler, or slung over a shoulder all day.
The details here are what win people over. The rear sight is an XS ghost ring paired with a gold bead up front, which is about as fast a sighting setup as you can put on a lever gun. If you want glass, the receiver wears a Picatinny top rail and also accepts mounts cut for the Marlin 1894 hole pattern. At woods distances, absolutely. Out of the 19.25 inch barrel, .45 Colt picks up meaningful velocity over a revolver, and standard loads handle deer and hogs well inside 100 yards or so. Recoil stays mild, which makes it easy to shoot accurately and a great choice for newer hunters too.
