There's something about a walnut-stocked .30-30 that just feels right in a deer stand, and Smith & Wesson clearly gets it. The Model 1854 made a big splash as the company's first lever action in 170 years, and this Traditional Walnut version chambers it in the cartridge that practically defined lever gun hunting. You get real walnut furniture with textured grip panels on the stock and fore-end, wrapped around a forged 416 stainless steel receiver with a tough black Armornite finish that shrugs off wet weather far better than old-school bluing.
The 20 inch 410 stainless barrel runs a 1:10 twist and comes threaded 5/8-24 with a protector installed, so hanging a suppressor on it takes about thirty seconds. Up top, a 5.75 inch Picatinny base is already mounted for a red dot or scout-style scope, and if you'd rather run irons, the adjustable XS Sights ghost ring rear and gold bead front are a genuinely good pairing that gets on target fast in low light. The large loop lever leaves room for gloved hands on cold November mornings, and the flat-faced trigger breaks clean, which is not something you could say about most lever guns from decades past.
This is a side loading gate design with a fixed magazine tube holding 6 rounds, plus one in the chamber. Absolutely. The rifle ships with a 5.75 inch Picatinny base already installed on the flat-top receiver, so it accepts red dots, scout scopes, or traditional optics with Picatinny rings. If you prefer irons, the XS ghost ring rear and gold bead front sights are excellent as they come.
Rounds feed through a side loading gate on the right of the receiver into a fixed 6-round magazine tube, just like a traditional lever gun. Unlike the pistol-caliber 1854 models with removable mag tubes, the .30-30 version uses a fixed tube, so unloading is done by cycling rounds through the action.
It weighs 7.5 pounds with an overall length of 37.8 inches, which is right in the sweet spot for a .30-30 carry rifle. The large loop lever works well with gloves, and the walnut fore-end has textured panels that give a solid grip in wet conditions. Integrated sling mounts make it easy to add a carry strap for long walks in.
