There's a reason the 686 has been in continuous production since the early 1980s. Smith & Wesson built the L-Frame specifically to handle a steady diet of full-power .357 Magnum, splitting the difference between the smaller K-Frame and the big N-Frame. The result is a revolver stout enough for magnum loads all day long but still balanced enough to carry and shoot well. This 686 Plus version bumps capacity from six to seven rounds, and the 2.5 inch barrel keeps the whole package compact at 7.5 inches overall.
The satin stainless frame, cylinder, and barrel shrug off sweat, weather, and holster wear better than any blued finish will. The black synthetic grip soaks up recoil, which matters when you're touching off magnums from a shorter barrel. The standard Model 686 holds six rounds, while the 686 Plus uses a seven-round cylinder on the same L-Frame. Beyond the extra round, the guns are essentially identical in construction, so you get more capacity with no real tradeoff in size or weight.
