Yes. Like any .44 Magnum revolver, the Model 29 Classic happily runs .44 S&W Special, which is a shorter, milder round. A lot of owners do most of their practice with Specials and save the full power magnums for hunting or the occasional range session. It makes for a much more comfortable day of shooting.
The 4 inch Model 29 hits a sweet spot for a lot of people. It balances well, carries much easier in a holster than the 6.5 inch version, and the 9.25 inch overall length works great as a woods and trail gun. You give up a bit of velocity and sight radius compared to longer barrels, but for anything short of dedicated long range handgun hunting, the 4 inch handles it.
