The Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy Comp packages all of that into a factory-built gun that doesn't require a second mortgage. The 4.25-inch barrel length hits a sweet spot: more maneuverable than the full five-inch model, but still with plenty of sight radius and mass to shoot smooth. The forged steel frame and slide are both finished in Springfield's H-250 Coyote Brown Cerakote, matched by a Coyote Brown polymer grip module for a cohesive, purpose-built look that stands out from the standard black lineup.
The compensation system on the Prodigy Comp isn't just a marketing add-on. Springfield machined an expansion chamber directly into the heavy bull barrel, then cut a port through the top of the slide above it. The Prodigy uses the 2011 double-stack magazine pattern, which is cross-compatible with the Staccato 2011 platform and Bul Armory pistols. The factory magazines are made by Check-Mate, and the broader 2011 magazine ecosystem means spare mags in 17-, 20-, and even 26-round configurations are widely available. Note that Glock and SIG P320 magazines are not compatible — the 2011 grip module only accepts 2011-pattern mags.
The Prodigy Comp uses a traditional single-action 1911 trigger with very little take-up and a clean break, measuring roughly 4.5 to 5 pounds in real-world testing. It feels lighter and more precise than the triggers found on most striker-fired pistols at a similar price, which is one of the main reasons people gravitate toward the 1911 platform in the first place.
