There are rifles you buy because they check boxes on a spec sheet, and then there are rifles you buy because they mean something. The Springfield Armory M1A Standard is the latter, though it happens to check plenty of boxes too. This is Springfield's faithful semi-auto take on the M14, the battle rifle that served as the standard issue arm of the U.S. military from 1959 to 1970, and it has been in continuous production since 1974 for good reason. The walnut stock and black parkerized metalwork give it that unmistakable mid-century service rifle look, and at just over 9 pounds it carries the kind of heft that soaks up .308 recoil nicely.
The 22 inch carbon steel barrel wears six-groove rifling with a 1:11 twist, a proven combination for stabilizing the full range of .308 Winchester and 7.62×51 NATO loads. Up top you get a National Match .062 inch front blade paired with a military aperture rear that adjusts for both windage and elevation, riding on a long sight radius that makes iron sight work genuinely rewarding. The two-stage military trigger breaks between 5 and 6 pounds with that distinct take-up and clean wall that M14 fans know well. Feeding comes from a detachable 10-round box magazine, and the gas piston operating system with its op-rod and roller cam bolt runs with the reliability this action earned generations ago.

Better than most people expect from a service-pattern rifle. The National Match front blade and adjustable rear aperture ride on a long sight radius, and the two-stage trigger makes clean breaks easy. With decent ammo and good fundamentals, hits on man-sized steel at several hundred yards are very doable.

The Loaded steps up to a National Match grade barrel, upgraded sights, and other accuracy-focused parts. If you want the classic experience and appearance, the Standard is the one to get.
