Description

The Springfield Armory Echelon 4.0C Comp is what happens when a duty pistol goes on a diet without giving up anything important. Built around a 4-inch cold hammer-forged barrel with a Melonite finish and an integral single-port compensator machined directly into the slide and barrel, it redirects propellant gases upward to reduce muzzle rise and keep you on target faster between shots. This isn't a tacked-on comp — it's part of the gun itself. And Springfield was smart enough to position the front sight behind the port, so your sight picture stays clean no matter what.

The heart of the platform is the serialized Central Operating Group, a self-contained stainless steel chassis that houses all the fire control components. Because the COG is the serialized part, you can swap grip modules without going through a dealer — a genuinely useful feature for anyone who wants to tailor the gun to their hand size or pick up a different-colored frame down the road. The pistol ships with a small grip module and three interchangeable backstraps (small, medium, and large), each with a built-in armorer's tool. The pressure-activated grip texture is worth noting too — it feels smooth until you actually grip the gun, then it bites in and holds.

On the optics side, the Variable Interface System is one of the more impressive things Springfield has done with this platform. Using a set of patent-pending self-locking pins, the VIS lets you mount over 30 popular red dot sights directly to the slide without any adapter plates. That includes footprints from Trijicon, Holosun, Leupold, and others. Fewer parts between your optic and the slide means a more secure, lower-mounted setup and better co-witnessing with the included U-Dot iron sights — a tritium and luminescent front sight paired with a Tactical Rack U-Dot rear.

The trigger, housed entirely within the COG, is built from tool steel components that are machined and polished for a clean take-up, defined wall, and crisp break with a short reset. Controls are fully ambidextrous, and the slide has four distinct engagement surfaces — forward and rear serrations, a trench cut for press checks, and a flared rear — making it easy to run in any conditions. An accessory rail under the dust cover handles lights and lasers.

This specific variant ships with two 15-round flush-fit magazines, both finished in a scratch-resistant black coating. A soft double-zipper carrying case is also included.

Frequently Asked Questions

What optics are compatible with the Echelon 4.0C Comp's Variable Interface System?

The VIS can directly mount over 30 popular red dot sights without any adapter plates, using a set of self-locking pins that adjust to the optic's footprint. Direct-mount compatible footprints include the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Shield RMSc, among others. Some footprints like ACRO and Docter require an optional adapter plate available from Springfield Armory. The low, plate-free mount also allows the included iron sights to co-witness with most optics.

How does the integral compensator on the Echelon 4.0C Comp work?

The compensator is a single port machined directly into the top of the hammer-forged barrel and slide — not a threaded accessory. It vents propellant gases upward as the bullet exits, which counteracts muzzle rise and helps the gun track back onto target faster between shots. Springfield positioned the front sight behind the port so gases don't obstruct your sight picture or foul the tritium element.

Why does this version come with two 15-round magazines instead of a 15 and an 18?

The standard Echelon 4.0C Comp typically ships with one 15-round flush-fit magazine and one 18-round extended magazine. This specific variant (MPN: EC9409B-U-COMP15) includes two 15-round flush-fit magazines. Both magazines share the same scratch and wear-resistant black coating as all Echelon mags.

Can I swap the grip module on the Echelon 4.0C Comp myself?

Yes, and it's one of the more practical features of the platform. Because the Central Operating Group is the serialized component, grip modules are considered unregulated parts and can be ordered directly without going through a dealer. The swap itself is straightforward — if you can field strip the pistol, you can change the module. The gun ships with a small module installed; medium and large are available separately from Springfield Armory.

How does the Echelon 4.0C Comp compare in size to something like a Glock 19?

The Echelon 4.0C Comp is very similar in overall footprint to the Glock 19 — 7.25 inches long, 5.125 inches tall, and 1.20 inches wide. It weighs 24 ounces unloaded, which is also in the same ballpark. Where it differentiates itself is in the direct-mount optics system, the integral compensator, and the modular grip setup, all of which the G19 doesn't offer out of the box.

Is the Echelon 4.0C Comp a good choice for everyday concealed carry?

It's a strong option for anyone who wants a carry gun that can also pull duty range and home defense work without swapping platforms. The compact frame and 4-inch barrel keep it manageable under a jacket or untucked shirt, while the compensator and grip modularity give it a shootability edge over most non-compensated carry guns in its class. The pressure-activated grip texture provides solid retention without being uncomfortable against the body during all-day carry.
