The Echelon 4.0C sits right in that sweet spot between compact enough to carry every day and capable enough to serve as a serious defensive platform. Springfield built this around the same bones as their full-size 4.5F, so you get the same modular stainless steel Central Operating Group, the same ambidextrous controls, and the same quality trigger in a package that measures 7.25 inches overall and weighs 24 ounces. The OD Green version coats the billet-machined slide and matching polymer frame in a tough Cerakote finish that holds up hard use without needing much maintenance beyond a basic cleaning routine.
The VIS is the feature that really separates this pistol from the competition. Instead of relying on adapter plates like most optics-ready guns, Springfield's Variable Interface System uses self-locking repositionable pins that physically shift to fit the footprint of over 30 popular red-dot sights. The optic mounts directly to the slide, which keeps it lower and more stable than plate-based setups, and in most cases you can still co-witness your iron sights through the glass. Speaking of irons, the standard U-Dot setup is genuinely great right out of the box. The Echelon 4.0C uses its own 15 and 18-round magazines, but the full-size 4.5F extended magazines can be used in the 4.0C as well. They will extend beyond the grip since the frame is shorter, which is not an issue at the range but defeats the purpose for carry use. Stick with the included 15-round flush mag for everyday carry and the 18-rounder for training and home defense.
