The TRP has been Springfield Armory's flagship 1911 for a long time, and for good reason — it traces its DNA directly back to the Professional 1911 that the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team chose in 1998. That heritage meant the TRP was built to a different standard than your typical production pistol, with hand-fitted slide-to-frame matching, forged components throughout, and a level of polish that usually costs a lot more. The 4.25" Carry Contour AOS in 9mm is a new chapter for the TRP lineup: it's the first time Springfield has offered the TRP in 9mm, and the first time it's come optics-ready from the factory.
The frame on this model is forged aluminum alloy rather than steel, which drops the unloaded weight to a surprisingly manageable 27.3 ounces — roughly 12 ounces lighter than a comparable all-steel Commander. The Carry Contour treatment gives the frame a bobbed rear profile that cuts down on printing without sacrificing your grip. Add 20 lines-per-inch checkering on the frontstrap and mainspring housing, VZ Hydra G-10 grips, and a Gen 2 speed trigger with a clean break right around 4.5 pounds, and this is a gun that feels dialed in before you ever add an optic. The integrated accessory rail up front gives you a mounting point for a weapon light, which matters a lot when you're running a red dot on a duty or home defense setup.
The AOS was developed in collaboration with Agency Arms and uses a modular plate system integrated directly into the slide. Each plate includes its own black serrated rear sight, so co-witness stays intact no matter which optic you mount. Supported footprints include RMR, Shield, Delta Point Pro, and Docter — covering the vast majority of what's popular right now. The pistol ships with a cover plate installed and includes a coupon toward an AOS mounting plate of your choice. The stainless steel match-grade barrel is hammer forged, and the tritium front sight keeps you covered if you ever need the irons in low light.
The slide is clean and understated on the left side — no cluttered rollmarks, just the essentials. It's a detail that separates the TRP from a lot of other production guns. This is the kind of 1911 you buy once and don't feel the itch to upgrade, because Springfield already did the work.
The TRP AOS is a Series 70-style design, meaning it does not have a firing pin safety block. This is generally preferred by 1911 purists because it eliminates the extra sear interaction that can make Series 80 triggers feel slightly mushy or spongy. The Gen 2 speed trigger on the TRP breaks cleanly right around 4.5 pounds out of the box.
The Agency Optic System supports a wide range of popular footprints including the Trijicon RMR, Shield RMSc, Leupold Delta Point Pro, and Docter/Noblex. Each AOS mounting plate has an integrated rear sight built in so you maintain a proper co-witness with whatever optic you run. The pistol ships with a cover plate installed, and Springfield includes a coupon toward an AOS plate of your choice.
The frame is forged aluminum alloy, not cast, which is an important distinction — forging produces a denser, stronger part than casting. The trade-off for the significant weight savings (around 12 ounces lighter than an all-steel Commander) is that aluminum frames will eventually show wear at the frame rails sooner than steel under extremely high round counts, though for most users this is a non-issue over a lifetime of normal use. The forged slide and match barrel are both steel, so the components that take the most stress are still full metal.

The rear sight is integrated into whichever AOS plate you install — the cover plate included ships with a black serrated rear, and any AOS optic plate you add will also have its own rear sight unit built in.
The Carry Contour refers to the bobbed rear profile of the aluminum frame — essentially a rounded, slightly shorter backstrap heel that reduces the sharp corner most full-size 1911 frames have. This makes the pistol noticeably more comfortable to carry and reduces printing under a cover garment. You still get a full firing grip; it's a subtle change that makes a real difference in day-to-day carry comfort.
The TRP sits at the top of Springfield's 1911 lineup because of how it's built, not just what's on it. Each slide and frame pair is hand-selected for fit, then numbered and matched to each other throughout the entire build process. The result is an extremely tight slide-to-frame fit with no slop — something you typically only see on custom shop guns. The Operator and Emissary are great pistols, but the TRP gets a level of hand-fitting attention that sets it apart.
