There are not many factory pistols that ship ready for a red dot, carry a match-grade trigger, and chamber a round as capable as 10mm Auto all at once. The Springfield XD-M Elite OSP in 4.5" black does exactly that, and it does it without asking you to spend another dollar to get there. The forged steel slide is milled from the factory to accept RMR/SRO-footprint optics via available mounting plates, so adding your preferred red dot is a straightforward swap rather than a gunsmithing project.
The heart of this pistol is the META (Match Enhanced Trigger Assembly). It runs a flat-faced shoe, a clean and crisp break, and an integral overtravel stop built in from the factory. That combination is genuinely hard to find on an out-of-the-box polymer pistol at this price point, and it translates directly to better shot-to-shot consistency. The 4.5" barrel is hammer-forged steel with a 1:16 twist and a Melonite finish that handles corrosion and wear better than traditional bluing. Springfield pairs it with a full-length guide rod and a captive one-piece recoil system, which helps tame the 10mm's recoil impulse and keeps muzzle flip in check.
The frame is built with the XD-M's signature aggressive stippling and textured backstrap, giving you a solid, locked-in grip even with wet hands. An integrated Picatinny rail up front lets you mount a light or laser without modification. The extended and removable flared magwell speeds up reloads without adding bulk you can not deal with, and the ambidextrous slide stop makes this pistol genuinely left-hand friendly.

For a 10mm, it is more manageable than many people expect. The full-size polymer frame, 31-ounce weight, and captive full-length guide rod recoil system all work together to soften the impulse and reduce muzzle flip. Yes. Springfield designed the magwell to be removable, so you can run it with or without depending on your use case. It is a nice touch that adds competition-style reload speed when you want it, without permanently committing the gun to a bulkier profile.
It is a strong option for that role. The 10mm Auto is well-regarded as a capable defense round against large predators, and 16+1 rounds gives you plenty of capacity. The Melonite-finished barrel and slide hold up well to moisture and rough conditions, and the fiber optic front sight gives you a fast pick-up in natural light.
The stock fiber optic front and U-Dot rear sights sit lower than co-witness height relative to most red dot optics. They work great as standalone irons, but if true co-witness is important to you, aftermarket suppressor-height or raised sights are available from several manufacturers to fit the XD-M platform.
The slide stop is fully ambidextrous, making it straightforward for left-handed shooters to run the gun without modification. The magazine release is also reversible. Combined with the grip safety that activates naturally with a proper firing grip, the controls are well thought out for a wide range of users.
