The 4.0FC sits in an interesting spot in the Echelon lineup. Springfield took the compact 4-inch slide assembly from the 4.0C and married it to the full-length grip frame of the 4.5F, giving you a pistol that carries like a compact but handles and holds ammo like a full-sizer. That combination results in a flush 17-round capacity, a 20-round extended option, and a grip that most people find noticeably easier to control under rapid fire than a pure compact would be. The shorter slide also cycles faster, which reviewers consistently note helps the sights return to target more quickly between shots.
At the heart of the platform is Springfield's serialized Central Operating Group, a self-contained stainless steel chassis that houses the operating system and can be moved between grip modules as your needs change. The Variable Interface System takes care of the optics side of things without requiring any machining or adapter plates. Three pin sets are included in the box, covering the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Shield footprints, which collectively puts more than 30 popular red dots in play. This particular COA model goes a step further: the slide comes factory-milled with the Aimpoint A-CUT interface and ships with the Aimpoint COA closed-emitter red dot already installed and ready to zero.
The trigger runs right around 5 pounds with a clean take-up, a defined wall, and a positive reset that's both tactile and audible. The grip features Springfield's Adaptive Grip Texture throughout, aggressive enough to hold under stress but not uncomfortable against the body. The 4.0FC is a hybrid configuration that borrows the 4-inch compact slide from the 4.0C and combines it with the full-length grip frame from the 4.5F. That means you get the same 17+1 flush capacity as the larger gun, along with a full hand-filling grip for recoil control, but with a shorter overall package. It handles differently than both models, with the lighter compact slide cycling faster and helping the sights track back on target more quickly.
The Variable Interface System, or VIS, is Springfield's patent-pending optic mounting system built into the slide. Instead of using adapter plates, it uses three sets of self-locking pins to accommodate over 30 popular red dot footprints, including the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Shield patterns. All three pin sets are included in the box. On the COA model specifically, the slide is factory-milled for the Aimpoint A-CUT interface, and the Aimpoint COA red dot comes pre-installed, so you just need to confirm your zero.
This model ships with the Aimpoint COA, a closed-emitter red dot sight with a 3.5 MOA dot. The closed-emitter design fully encloses the optical channel, making it highly resistant to rain, dust, and submersion. It mounts directly to the slide via the factory A-CUT interface without any intermediary plates, which reduces tolerance stacking and keeps the optic sitting as low as possible for a better natural sight picture.
It depends on your build and how you carry. The 4-inch slide makes it shorter and easier to conceal than the full-size 4.5F, but the full-length grip frame is the same size you'd find on a duty pistol, which is the main tradeoff. For people with larger frames or anyone who prioritizes control and capacity over maximum concealability, it works well. It is a more practical carry choice than a full-size gun and a more capable defensive tool than a compact.
The COA model includes one 17-round flush-fit magazine and one 20-round extended magazine. The 17-rounder sits flush with the grip for a cleaner profile, while the 20-rounder adds a small extension at the base. Both are coated in a scratch-resistant finish. The Echelon's magazine design is specific to the platform but the extended option gives you 20+1 with a round chambered, which is solid capacity for any role.
Yes, the slide stop and magazine release are both mirrored on either side of the frame, making it genuinely left-hand friendly right out of the box, not just reversible. The frame also features textured finger pads on both sides of the trigger guard that serve as index points and thumb rests depending on your shooting hand. The takedown lever is the one control that is only on the left side of the frame.
