Savage isn't exactly new to the firearms world, but the Stance XR represents a serious leap forward in their handgun lineup. Where the original Stance was a solid single-stack with modest capacity, the XR reworks the entire platform around what carry pistols need in 2025 and beyond: more rounds, better optics mounting, and modern ergonomics without ballooning the overall size.
The headline feature here is the Quick Release Optics (QRO) system. Instead of the standard drill-and-tap approach where you're hunting for tiny screws and swapping plates with a tool, the QRO uses a dovetail-style mount secured by a spring-actuated plunger. Press a pin punch into the plunger, slide the plate off sideways, and drop in your optic plate of choice. No slide removal required. It's a genuinely clever setup that makes swapping or adding a red dot faster than anything else in this class.
The stainless steel slide gets a black nitride finish for corrosion resistance and features wide canted serrations front and rear plus ported cuts that trim a bit of weight without compromising rigidity. Beveled edges make re-holstering smooth and snag-free, which matters more than people realize when you're running an OWB or IWB rig day in and day out. The FDE glass-filled nylon frame wraps around a modular chassis and is stippled 360 degrees around the grip, including forward of the trigger guard, so your support hand actually has something to grip. Three interchangeable backstraps let you fine-tune the fit to your hand.
At 6.2 inches long, 4.6 inches tall, and just under an inch wide at the slide, the Stance XR sits right in the middle of the double-stack micro-9 pack dimension-wise. The 3-dot night sights are a genuine carry-focused addition, and the ambidextrous mag release and slide catch mean left-handed carriers aren't left out. This model ships with one 10-round flush magazine and one 13-round extended magazine, plus a hard case. The extended mag gives you a full three-finger grip and a comfortable 14 rounds on tap.
The QRO plate on the Stance XR uses a dovetail-and-plunger mount rather than a traditional drilled-and-tapped slide cut, and the default plate fits the Shield RMSc footprint. Savage also makes additional QRO-compatible plates to accommodate other optic footprints. The plate swaps without removing the slide from the frame, which is one of the more user-friendly optic systems on any micro-9 right now.
This specific model (MPN 67065) does not include a manual thumb safety. The Stance XR line does offer manual safety variants under different model numbers, so if a manual safety is a priority for your carry setup, double-check the MPN before purchasing. The MC9 without safety relies on the integrated trigger safety blade for passive protection.
It sits comfortably in the middle of the double-stack micro-9 class at 6.2 inches long, 4.6 inches tall, and just under an inch wide at the slide. It's comparable to pistols like the Springfield Hellcat and Sig P365 in overall footprint. At 22 ounces unloaded it's a touch heavier than the segment average, but that's not unusual for a steel-slide micro-compact.
Yes, and that's one of the reasons Savage includes both magazines. The 10-round flush mag keeps the grip compact and the pistol printing as little as possible under a cover garment. The 13-round extended mag adds a bit of grip length that many people find more comfortable for a full firing grip, and it gives you three extra rounds. Swapping between the two depending on carry position or clothing is a common setup.
Fieldstripping the Stance XR is straightforward. There's a dedicated takedown lever on the left side of the frame forward of the trigger, so you're not dealing with any trigger-pull-during-disassembly steps. The modular chassis design also makes routine cleaning and maintenance pretty accessible, which is important for a carry gun that should be cleaned regularly.
Holster availability for the Stance XR has grown significantly since the pistol launched in late 2024, with multiple manufacturers now producing dedicated Kydex options. The XR has a Picatinny rail on the dustcover, so if you run a light or laser, make sure to spec a holster built for the light-bearing version as well. When shopping holsters, search specifically for the Savage Stance XR rather than the original Stance, as the two are dimensionally different.
