Straight wall cartridges have changed the game for a lot of deer hunters, and the 400 Legend is one of the best of the bunch. It splits the difference between the 350 Legend and the 450 Bushmaster, throwing a heavy .40 caliber bullet with plenty of authority on whitetails and hogs while keeping recoil at a level that won't beat you up from the bench. Savage chambered it in the Axis 2 XP, a complete package rifle that shows up with a 3-9x40mm duplex scope already mounted and boresighted at the factory. The 20 inch matte black carbon steel barrel is button rifled with a 1:16 twist, the right recipe for stabilizing the heavy bullets this cartridge was designed around. It's also threaded 11/16×24 at the muzzle, so adding a suppressor or brake down the road takes minutes instead of a gunsmith visit. Savage's thread-in headspacing and floating bolt head are the same accuracy features found across their bolt gun lineup, and the user-adjustable AccuTrigger lets you dial the pull anywhere from about 2.5 to 6 pounds without touching a screwdriver to the sear.
The Axis 2 got a real refresh over the original, and you can feel it. The gray synthetic stock has improved ergonomics, enhanced texturing on the grip and forend, and a redesigned bolt handle that's much easier to run with cold or gloved hands. At around 7.7 pounds with a 13.75 inch length of pull, it carries well into a climber or shooting house and points quickly in tight timber where most straight wall shots happen anyway.
A detachable 4-round box magazine gives you 4+1 capacity and makes loading and unloading at the truck simple. The receiver is drilled and tapped, so if you ever want to step up to different glass, swapping bases and rings is a straightforward job. As a complete package for woods-range deer hunting, this one is tough to argue with.
The 3-9x40mm duplex scope comes mounted and boresighted from the factory, which gets you on paper but is not a substitute for a proper zero. Plan on a range session with your hunting ammo to dial it in before the season. Once zeroed, the 3-9x range covers just about any distance the 400 Legend is built for.
Yes, the 20 inch barrel comes threaded 11/16×24 from the factory, so a suppressor or muzzle brake with matching threads spins right on. The 400 Legend pairs nicely with a can, and subsonic loads are available for the cartridge if you want to go that route.
Most hunters treat it as a solid 200 to 250 yard deer cartridge, which covers the vast majority of shots in timber, ag fields, and shooting houses. It delivers noticeably more energy than the 350 Legend with a heavier .40 caliber bullet, yet recoil stays manageable in a rifle this size. For deer and hogs at woods ranges, it hits plenty hard.
Absolutely. The receiver is drilled and tapped, so removing the included optic and mounting your own bases, rings, and scope is a simple upgrade whenever you're ready. Plenty of folks hunt with the package scope for years first, so there's no rush.
