There's a reason the 7mm-08 Remington keeps showing up in deer camps where a kid or smaller-framed hunter is carrying the rifle. It hits well above its recoil level, shoots flat enough for open country, and handles everything from whitetail to hogs without beating up the person behind it. Savage put that cartridge in the Axis 2 XP Compact, trimmed the stock down to a shorter length of pull, capped it with a 20 inch button-rifled barrel, and mounted a boresighted 3-9×40 scope at the factory. The result is a package you can take from the box to the bench with nothing to buy except ammo.
The second-generation Axis picked up some meaningful upgrades over the original. The user-adjustable AccuTrigger lets you dial the pull weight to your liking without a trip to a gunsmith, and it's a genuine step up from the mushy triggers you find on most entry-level bolt guns. Thread-in headspacing and a floating bolt head help the rifle deliver the kind of accuracy Savage built its name on, while the reworked stock adds better texturing and ambidextrous palm swells on the grip. The redesigned bolt handle is easier to run with cold or gloved hands, which matters more than you'd think on a November morning.
The included 3-9×40 scope comes with fully multi-coated lenses and tool-less windage and elevation adjustments, and since it ships mounted and boresighted, getting zeroed usually takes just a box of shells and a little bench time. The gray synthetic stock shrugs off weather and scratches, the matte black metalwork keeps glare down in the stand, and the detachable 4-round box magazine makes loading and unloading quick and simple.
This one shines for young hunters stepping up to their first centerfire, adults with a shorter reach, or anyone who wants a lighter, handier rifle for blinds and thick timber. It's a lot of proven rifle in a package sized for the people who need it most.
Yes, and it's one of the more popular picks for exactly that. The compact stock gives a shorter length of pull so smaller-framed hunters get a proper cheek weld and reach to the trigger, and the 7mm-08 cartridge delivers plenty of punch for deer with noticeably less recoil than a .308 or .30-06. It's also enough rifle that most people never feel the need to move on from it.
No, the XP designation means the 3-9×40 scope comes mounted and boresighted from the factory. The scope has fully multi-coated lenses and tool-less windage and elevation adjustments. Boresighting gets you on paper, but you'll still want to spend a little range time fine-tuning your zero with your hunting load before the season.
It can. This rifle uses Savage's AccuTrigger, which lets you adjust the pull weight yourself with the included tool rather than paying a gunsmith. It also has an integrated safety blade in the trigger, so you get a crisp, light break without giving up peace of mind in the field.
The 7mm-08 is a fantastic all-around big game cartridge. It handles whitetail, mule deer, antelope, and hogs with ease, and with well-constructed bullets plenty of hunters take black bear and even elk with it at reasonable ranges. It shoots flat, hits hard for its size, and stays comfortable on the shoulder, which is why it has such a loyal following.
