There's a lot to like about a rifle that shows up with the scope already mounted and bore-sighted. The Savage Axis XP Compact in 6.5 Creedmoor is exactly that kind of package: a scaled-down bolt action wearing a 3-9×40 optic from the factory, so all that's left is confirming zero with your hunting load and heading for the woods. The 6.5 Creedmoor chambering is a big part of the appeal here. It recoils noticeably lighter than a .308 while shooting flat and hitting plenty hard for deer and antelope, which makes it one of the best pairings you'll find for a compact rifle and a newer hunter.
This is the redesigned Axis platform, and the improvements are the kind you feel in your hands. The black synthetic stock has a reshaped pistol grip with palm swells on both sides, better texturing where you grab it, and a recoil pad to soak up what little kick the 6.5 produces. The new longer bolt handle sits farther off the stock, which makes cycling easier with cold fingers or gloves on. Underneath, you get the same fundamentals that earned the Axis its reputation: a precision button-rifled carbon steel barrel and thread-in headspacing for consistent accuracy at a working-rifle price.
The compact stock and 20 inch barrel bring overall length down to 39.5 inches at around 7.4 pounds scoped, so it shoulders quickly, fits smaller-framed folks properly, and rides well in a blind or truck. Feeding comes from a detachable 4-round box magazine for quick, clean reloads, a tang safety sits right under your thumb, and sling swivel studs are already in place for a sling or bipod. For a first deer rifle, a youth setup that won't get outgrown ballistically, or just a lighter gun to carry all day, this one covers a lot of ground without fuss.
The 3-9×40 scope comes factory mounted and bore-sighted, which gets you on paper but is not the same as a true zero. Plan on a short range session with the ammo you intend to hunt with to fine-tune your zero before the season. Most folks are dialed in within a box of ammo.
It's sized for smaller-framed folks with a shorter stock and 20 inch barrel, but plenty of adults prefer a compact rifle for treestands, blinds, and thick cover. If you're of average build or smaller, it will likely fit you fine. Taller shooters with long arms may find the length of pull a bit short.
It's one of the best matches out there for a lighter rifle. The 6.5 Creedmoor recoils gently compared to .308 or .30-06, which matters a lot in a 7.4 pound scoped package, and it still carries plenty of energy for deer-sized game at practical hunting distances. That mild recoil also helps newer hunters build good habits instead of a flinch.
It ships with one 4-round detachable box magazine, giving you a 4+1 total capacity. Savage's Axis-pattern magazines are widely available, so picking up a spare or two for the pack is easy. The detachable design also makes loading and unloading at the truck quick and simple.
