There is a reason the Savage Axis XP shows up in so many deer camps. It gives you a genuinely accurate bolt gun, a scope already mounted and boresighted at the factory, and a caliber in .243 Winchester that handles everything from coyotes to whitetails without beating up your shoulder. For a first deer rifle or a no-fuss truck gun, this package is hard to argue with.
Savage builds the Axis XP around a 22 inch button rifled carbon steel barrel with thread-in headspacing, the same approach that gives their pricier rifles that tack-driving reputation. The redesigned Axis brings improved ergonomics and a reshaped bolt handle that is easier to run with cold hands or gloves on, which matters more than you might think on a late season sit. The receiver is drilled and tapped, feeding comes from a detachable 4 round box magazine, and the matte black metalwork paired with the black synthetic sporter stock shrugs off rain and rough handling.
The .243 Winchester chambering is one of the best all-around choices going. Recoil is mild enough for newer hunters and smaller framed folks, but it still carries plenty of punch for deer and antelope, and it doubles nicely as a varmint rifle with lighter bullets. The included 3-9×40 scope covers the magnification range most hunters use for the vast majority of their shots. It arrives boresighted, so you are only a box of ammo and a little bench time away from being ready for opening day.
At 7.6 pounds with the scope and a 42.5 inch overall length, it carries comfortably on long walks to the stand. Everything you need to hunt is in the box, and the accuracy holds its own against rifles costing quite a bit more. If you want a dependable bolt action that just works, this one belongs on your short list.
The 3-9×40 scope comes factory mounted and boresighted, which gets you on paper at the range. Boresighting is not the same as a true zero though, so plan on shooting a group or two at 100 yards and making final adjustments before hunting with it. Most folks are dialed in with less than a box of ammo.
It is one of the best. Recoil is soft enough that new and younger hunters can practice without developing a flinch, yet it has plenty of energy for deer and antelope at typical hunting distances. With lighter bullets it also makes a great coyote and varmint round, so the same rifle pulls double duty.
Absolutely. The receiver is drilled and tapped, so swapping to a different base and rings or a higher end optic down the road is straightforward. Plenty of Axis owners run the included scope for a few seasons and upgrade the glass as their needs grow.
The Axis XP uses a precision button rifled barrel and thread-in headspacing, the same manufacturing methods Savage uses across its rifle lineup. With hunting ammo it loves, this rifle is fully capable of accuracy that outperforms its price class. Trying a few different loads to find what your barrel prefers is the quickest path to tight groups.
