Straight-wall cartridges have earned a permanent spot in a lot of deer camps, and the .350 Legend is one of the big reasons why. It hits with authority inside typical whitetail distances, recoil stays mild enough for newer hunters and smaller-framed folks, and ammo is easy to find. The Savage Axis 2 XP wraps that cartridge in a package that makes a lot of sense: an 18-inch sporter barrel with a 1:16 twist, a 4-round detachable box magazine, and a 3-9×40 scope already mounted and boresighted at the factory. You still want to confirm zero with your hunting load, but the heavy lifting of rings, bases, and alignment is done before the box is opened.
This second-generation Axis got a real refresh, not just a new sticker. The gray synthetic stock has improved ergonomics with better texturing where your hands land, and the reshaped bolt handle is easier to run with cold or wet hands. The receiver is drilled and tapped, headspacing is thread-in for consistency, and the whole thing carries a 42.5-inch overall length that stays maneuverable in a box blind or thick timber. The star of the show is still Savage's AccuTrigger, which you can adjust yourself from around 2.5 up to 6 pounds. A crisp, safe, tunable trigger on a rifle in this class is a big part of why the Axis line has such a loyal following.
At roughly seven pounds scoped, this rifle carries comfortably on a shoulder sling all morning without feeling like a toy when it is time to settle the crosshairs. The 3-9×40 scope has fully multi-coated lenses and tool-less windage and elevation adjustments, and that magnification range covers everything a .350 Legend is realistically asked to do. Pair it with a 150 to 180 grain load, spend one afternoon at the bench dialing it in, and you have a genuinely capable deer rifle that did not require piecing anything together yourself.
The 3-9×40 scope comes mounted and boresighted from the factory, which gets you on paper without buying rings or bases. Boresighting is not the same as a true zero, though, so plan a range session to dial it in with the ammo you intend to hunt with. Most folks are zeroed within a box of ammunition.
