There is a lot to like about a rifle that shows up ready to work, and that is exactly the idea behind the Savage Axis 2 XP Compact. Savage chambers this one in .308 Win, arguably the most versatile deer cartridge in America, then tops it with a factory mounted and bore sighted 3-9×40 scope with multi-coated lenses. Confirm zero with your hunting load, and you have a legitimate whitetail rig without hunting down rings, bases, or a gunsmith to put it all together.
The Axis 2 XP Compact runs a 20 inch heavy sporter barrel with a 1:10 twist, which stabilizes the full range of popular .308 bullet weights while keeping overall length down to a very manageable 39.5 inches. The shortened gray synthetic stock is a big deal for younger hunters, smaller framed adults, or anyone tired of wrestling a full size rifle in a cramped box blind. Integral swivel studs are molded right in, so adding a sling or bipod is a two minute job.
Savage's user adjustable AccuTrigger is the standout feature in this price class, letting you tune the pull weight to your liking without a trip to the bench vise. Combine that with Savage's thread-in headspacing, a process that keeps chamber tolerances tight from the factory, and these rifles have earned a real reputation for punching tight groups straight out of the box. The redesigned bolt handle is easier to run with cold or gloved hands, and the two position tang safety sits right under your thumb where it belongs.
A detachable 4 round box magazine gives you 4+1 on board, plenty for a deer season, and swapping mags is quick when you are cycling between practice and hunting ammo. Since .308 Win ammunition is stocked on nearly every gun shop shelf in the country, finding a load this barrel likes will not take long. For a first deer rifle, a truck gun, or a do-it-all bolt gun that will not empty your wallet, this package is tough to argue with.
Yes, the 3-9×40 scope arrives factory mounted on Weaver-style bases and bore sighted from Savage. Bore sighting gets you on paper, but plan on a range session to fine tune your zero with the ammo you plan to hunt with. Most owners report getting dialed in within a box of shells.
That is exactly who this model was built for. The compact stock has a shorter length of pull than the full size Axis 2, and the 20 inch barrel trims overall length to 39.5 inches, making it easier to shoulder and carry. The adjustable AccuTrigger also lets you set a pull weight that suits a newer marksman.
The AccuTrigger uses a blade in the center of the trigger shoe that must be fully depressed before the rifle will fire, allowing Savage to offer a light, crisp pull safely. You can adjust the pull weight yourself at home using the included instructions, no gunsmith required. It is one of the best factory triggers you will find on a budget friendly bolt gun.
The .308 Winchester handles everything from whitetail and hogs up to elk and black bear with the right bullet. The 1:10 twist barrel stabilizes common bullet weights from around 150 to 180 grains, so you have plenty of factory load options. It is a proven all-around big game cartridge with ammo available just about anywhere.
