There's a reason the Sauer 100 gets brought up whenever someone asks about the most rifle you can get without stepping into custom territory. J.P. Sauer & Sohn has been building rifles in Germany for a very long time, and the 100 Classic XT carries that heritage into a no-frills hunting platform. This version is chambered in 6.5 PRC, a cartridge that has earned its keep with hunters who want flat trajectories, strong downrange energy, and manageable recoil for shots that stretch well past where most cartridges get uncomfortable.
The barrel is where Sauer really shows off. It's cold hammer-forged in house, 22 inches long, and threaded 1/2×28 at the muzzle so adding a suppressor or brake takes minutes instead of a trip to the gunsmith. The bolt runs with the smooth, tight feel Sauer is known for, and the 60 degree bolt lift keeps your hand clear of the scope while speeding up follow-up shots. Feeding comes from a double-stack detachable magazine holding four rounds, with one more in the chamber. An adjustable single-stage trigger lets you dial in a clean, crisp break, and the three-position safety gives you the option to cycle the bolt with the safety still engaged.
Sauer borrowed the stock geometry from its premium S 101 and S 404 rifles, and it shows. The raised comb on the ERGO MAX synthetic stock lines your eye up naturally behind a scope, so you spend less time hunting for a cheek weld and more time settled on target. The receiver comes drilled and tapped and accepts Remington 700 pattern bases, which opens up just about every mount on the market.
Owners consistently report sub-MOA groups from these rifles with factory ammo, which is exactly what you want when a shot opportunity comes at distance. With its matte blued metalwork and weather-resistant synthetic stock, this is a rifle built to ride in the truck, climb the mountain, and deliver when it matters.
The receiver is drilled and tapped and accepts standard Remington 700 pattern scope bases, so you have a huge range of mounting options. Sauer also offers its own Hexalock mount if you want to stay in the family. No iron sights are included, so plan on adding an optic.
It works well, especially for a hunting rifle you'll carry. You give up a little velocity compared to a 24 inch tube, but the 6.5 PRC still delivers excellent downrange performance, and owners regularly report sub-MOA accuracy from this rifle. The shorter barrel also keeps overall length reasonable once a suppressor goes on.
The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28, one of the most common pitches out there. Most 6.5mm and .30 caliber suppressors, brakes, and thread adapters will spin right on. A thread protector keeps things clean when running the bare muzzle.
