A piston is one of those parts nobody gets excited about until they need one, and then thread pitch is everything. This is Rugged's OP001, cut for .578×28, the standard thread you'll find on most .45 ACP threaded barrels from 1911s to HK45s and plenty in between. Thread it into your Obsidian 45's booster assembly and you're set to run that host without touching the rest of your setup.
A lot of pistons on the market use slots cut into the body, and those slots give combustion gas a path straight back toward your face. Rugged went a different route. This piston is non-slotted, which creates a gas seal around the full circumference of the piston. The result is noticeably less blowback coming back through the action, which makes a real difference over a long range session, especially on a suppressed pistol where you're right behind the gun.
Rugged machines this piston from 17-4 stainless steel and heat treats it, the same material they use for the Obsidian's baffle stack. That's overkill in the best way for a part that lives in a hot, carbon-heavy environment and gets threaded on and off between hosts. The copper-colored finish also makes it easy to spot in your parts bin next to the black stuff.
Swapping pistons is a hand-tight, no-tools job, so keeping a few thread pitches on hand means one suppressor covers your whole pistol safe. One thing worth knowing before you buy: pistons and boosters are for tilting-barrel pistols. If you're mounting your can on a fixed barrel host like a carbine or subgun, you'll want to replace the booster spring with a fixed barrel spacer instead. Double check your barrel's thread pitch before ordering, because .578×28 is common on .45 pistols but far from universal.
Yes. While this piston ships as the standard mount for the Obsidian 45, Rugged's Obsidian pistons are cross-compatible between the Obsidian 45 and Obsidian 9. Keep in mind .578×28 is a .45 caliber thread pitch, so on an Obsidian 9 it only makes sense if you have a host barrel threaded that way.
Slotted pistons vent gas through the slots and a good portion of it comes back at the shooter. Rugged's non-slotted body seals the entire circumference of the piston, so more gas stays out of the action. In practice that means less blowback in your face and a cleaner-feeling gun during long suppressed sessions.
Not with the booster spring in place. Pistons are meant for tilting-barrel pistols where the booster lets the action cycle reliably. On a fixed barrel platform, Rugged specifies swapping the spring for a fixed barrel spacer, which locks everything up solid.
Check your threaded barrel's specs, either stamped on the barrel or in the manufacturer's documentation. The .578×28 pitch is the common standard for .45 ACP threaded barrels in the US, including most 1911 and Glock 21 aftermarket barrels. If your barrel is metric, like on some HK models, you'll need a different piston from Rugged's lineup.
