Ruger took the rifle that put affordable accuracy on the map and gave it a serious round of upgrades, and the Prairie version of the American Gen II might be the best looking of the bunch. The barreled action wears a Smoked Bronze Cerakote finish that shrugs off weather and field wear, while the black synthetic stock gets a gray and bronze splatter texture that gives your hands real purchase without chewing them up. Chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor with a 1:8 twist, this one is set up to stabilize the long, heavy bullets that made the cartridge famous for reaching way out there.
The 20 inch cold hammer-forged barrel is a bull contour with shallow spiral fluting, so you get the stiffness and recoil-taming weight of a heavy barrel with a bit of the heft trimmed off and extra surface area for cooling. The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24 and ships with a color-matched thread protector, so adding a suppressor or brake is as easy as it gets. Ruger's Power Bedding block free-floats that barrel in the stock, and the Marksman Adjustable trigger lets you dial the pull anywhere from 3 to 5 pounds. A one-piece Picatinny base comes installed, so you can mount glass the day it comes home.
The Gen II improvements go beyond looks. You get a stainless steel one-piece bolt with a three-lug, 70 degree throw for plenty of scope clearance, an oversized threaded bolt handle you can swap if you like, and a three-position tang safety that locks the bolt while still letting you load with the safety on. The stock has a removable comb riser to line your eye up behind a scope, and pulling the length of pull spacer takes it from 13.75 inches down to 12, handy for smaller frames or shooting in heavy winter layers. The soft recoil pad compresses progressively to soak up what little kick the Creedmoor delivers.
At 7 pounds and 41.25 inches overall, it feeds from a 3-round AI-style detachable magazine and splits the difference nicely between a lightweight hunter and a heavy precision rig. Whether it's coyotes across a bean field, deer at the edge of timber, or steel on the weekend, this rifle covers a lot of ground for the money.
Yes. The 20 inch barrel comes threaded 5/8×24 from the factory with a color-matched thread protector installed. That thread pattern fits the vast majority of 30 caliber and 6.5mm suppressors and muzzle brakes, so you can add a can without any gunsmith work.
You can adjust both. The Ruger Marksman Adjustable trigger is user-adjustable between 3 and 5 pounds, and the stock includes a removable length of pull spacer that takes the fit from 13.75 inches down to 12. There is also a removable comb riser that lifts your cheek weld for scopes, and Ruger sells additional spacers and comb heights if you want to fine tune further.
There are no iron sights on this model, but Ruger installs a one-piece Picatinny scope base at the factory. Just add rings and your optic of choice and it is ready for the range. The three-lug bolt with its short 70 degree throw also gives your scope's ocular bell plenty of clearance while cycling.
It feeds from a detachable AI-style (AICS pattern) magazine, and one 3-round mag comes in the box. Since AICS is one of the most common short action magazine patterns out there, finding spares or higher capacity options from Ruger and aftermarket makers is easy.
