The LC380 was Ruger's answer to a simple question: what if you took the LC9's proven frame and swapped in .380 ACP for a softer, more approachable shooting experience? The result is a compact, single-stack pistol that gives you a nearly full grip, real sights, and a manageable trigger in a package that disappears under a t-shirt. Ruger introduced it in 2013 and it found a following pretty quickly among people who wanted something more shootable than a micro pocket pistol but still easy enough to carry every day.
The frame is one-piece glass-filled nylon, which keeps the weight down without sacrificing durability. The slide and barrel are through-hardened alloy steel with a blued finish, giving the gun a more substantial feel than a lot of polymer pistols in this class. The dual recoil spring assembly does double duty here — it softens felt recoil noticeably and also makes racking the slide easier than you might expect, which is a real benefit for anyone who struggles with stiff slide springs on smaller guns.
Safety features are thorough for a carry pistol. You get a manual thumb safety, a magazine disconnect that prevents firing without a magazine inserted, a firing pin safety, and a loaded chamber indicator that lets you confirm chamber status both visually and by touch. The dovetailed 3-dot sight system has a windage-adjustable rear and a fixed front, giving you a sight picture that's actually usable at defensive distances. The checkered grip frame provides a solid purchase, and the included finger extension floorplate can be added to the magazine if you want a bit more grip real estate.
Because the LC380 shares its footprint with the LC9, LC9 holsters and most accessories designed for that platform fit the LC380 as well. That means a wide selection of holster options right out of the gate, including trigger guard-mounted laser options from Crimson Trace and LaserMax. It ships with one 7-round magazine.
The LC380 and LC9 are essentially the same gun dimensionally — same height, length, width, and weight. The biggest differences are the caliber, the magazine (which uses an internal spacer to accommodate the shorter .380 cartridge), and the softer recoil impulse. If you've ever handled an LC9, the LC380 will feel completely familiar in hand.
It's well-suited for it. At under an inch wide and just over 17 ounces, it carries comfortably in a pocket holster or IWB rig. The smooth contours and minimal external snag points help with a clean draw. The manual thumb safety and long DAO trigger give added peace of mind when carrying with one in the chamber.
The LC380 generally runs well with quality hollow points like Hornady Critical Defense as well as standard pressure FMJ loads. Sticking with reputable defensive ammo and standard pressure rounds is the way to go — the platform is optimized for standard pressure .380 ACP, so avoid +P unless specifically cleared by Ruger.
