There is something about a walnut and blued steel bolt gun that never goes out of style, and the Ruger Hawkeye Hunter in .308 Win backs up its good looks with a genuinely useful setup. The 16.6 inch cold hammer-forged barrel is free-floated, cut with 5R rifling, and threaded 5/8×24 with a thread protector from the factory. That short barrel keeps the overall length at just 36.6 inches, which makes a real difference climbing into a treestand, still-hunting thick timber, or working out of a truck or blind. And with .308 losing very little practical performance from the shorter tube, you give up almost nothing at normal hunting distances.
The heart of this rifle is the M77 Hawkeye action, with its non-rotating Mauser-type extractor that grabs the case rim as the round leaves the magazine and holds onto it until the fixed blade ejector kicks it clear. It is one of the most dependable feeding systems ever put in a hunting rifle, and it works at any bolt speed, upside down, or with cold, gloved hands. The three-position safety lets you cycle the action with the safety on, and the hinged solid-steel floorplate dumps the 4-round magazine without running cartridges through the chamber. The LC6 trigger breaks clean out of the box.
