The RXM name is literally a mashup of Ruger and Magpul, and that partnership is the whole story here. Rather than bolting a Magpul accessory onto an existing gun, the two companies designed this pistol together from the start. Ruger handled the precision-machined steel components, barrel, slide, and fire control unit, while Magpul brought their polymer expertise to build the Enhanced Handgun Grip module. The result is a full-size 9mm with 17+1 capacity that feels cohesive in a way most collaborations don't.
The standout feature is the removable serialized stainless steel Fire Control Insert, or FCI. This is the actual registered firearm component, and it sits inside the Magpul EHG rather than the grip frame itself being serialized. That means swapping to a different-sized Magpul RG9 grip is genuinely easy and affordable. Sub-compact, compact, and full-size EHG options are all available separately, giving the RXM a level of modularity that's more like the SIG P320 concept than anything you'd find on a basic polymer pistol. Most major components are also designed for Gen 3 Glock compatibility, so the aftermarket depth is enormous right out of the gate.
The 4.5" alloy steel barrel wears a black FNC nitride finish, and the through-hardened alloy steel slide matches. That optics-ready slide is cut to directly accept RMR, DeltaPoint Pro, and RMSc footprint optics with no adapter plates needed. Co-witness-height steel sights are included, with a tritium front sight for low-light use. The rear is drift-adjustable steel. Extended magazine release and raised slide stop come standard, and the EHG's 3/4-scale TSP texture provides a secure grip without being rough on a cover garment. There's also a flared mag well, undercut trigger guard, beavertail, and a universal accessory rail for lights or lasers.
This particular model ships with two Magpul PMAG 17 GL9 magazines. It also feeds standard Gen 3 Glock-pattern double-stack magazines without issue, which is a big deal for anyone who already has a collection of mags on hand. Yes, the RXM is compatible with Gen 3 Glock-pattern double-stack 9mm magazines. The gun ships with two Magpul PMAG 17 GL9 magazines, and it also runs standard OEM Glock mags without issue. If you already have Gen 3-style 9mm mags in your safe, they should work just fine.
The RXM's slide is cut for direct mounting of Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Shield RMSc footprint optics with no adapter plate required. Popular options like the Holosun 507C and Shield RMS2 also fit natively. The co-witness-height iron sights let you use backup irons alongside a mounted optic.
The biggest difference is the removable stainless steel Fire Control Insert. The FCI is the serialized component, meaning you can swap the polymer grip module to different sizes without needing a new firearm. The factory Magpul EHG grip also brings better ergonomics, a flared magwell, undercut trigger guard, and purpose-built texturing compared to what you'd get out of the box on a standard polymer pistol. The optics-ready slide with tritium night sights rounds out a feature set that would otherwise require aftermarket upgrades on competing guns.
That's exactly what the platform is designed for. The FCI can be removed and dropped into a compact or sub-compact Magpul EHG RG9 grip, which are sold separately. This means one FCI can essentially power multiple pistol configurations at very low cost. It's similar in concept to what SIG Sauer did with the P320's FCU.
Because the RXM shares a very similar footprint with the Glock 19, a wide range of Gen 3 Glock 19-compatible holsters will fit. The Magpul EHG grip module isn't an exact clone of the G19 frame, so it's always worth testing your specific holster with the gun before relying on it for carry. Ruger also offers a holster finder tool on their website to check compatibility.
The extra half inch of barrel adds a bit more sight radius, which can help with accuracy at distance, and contributes marginally to muzzle velocity. It makes the overall length 7.65" compared to the 7.15" of the 4" variant. Both sizes use the same EHG grip and the same FCI, so the handling and controls feel identical. The 4.5" is a touch larger but still very manageable as a full-size pistol.
