Built in Italy by a family that has been making fine doubles since 1966, this 28 gauge over/under pairs a steel boxlock action with full sideplates, and those plates exist for one reason: to give the engravers room to work. The ornamental scroll is hand finished by Rizzini artisans, with a lion detail on the belly of the action, and the coin finish shows off every cut.
Battista Rizzini personally selects the Turkish walnut that goes into each Artemis stock and forend, and it shows in the grain. The rounded Prince of Wales grip and slim rounded forend carry crisp 26 lines-per-inch checkering, and the whole gun balances the way a small-bore field piece should. Because Rizzini scales the frame to the gauge rather than hanging 28 gauge barrels on a bigger action, this one comes in right around six pounds. That is the kind of weight you appreciate at hour four of a grouse walk.
The 29-inch barrels are chrome lined for easy cleaning and long service, topped with a vent rib and a silver front bead that points naturally on flushing birds. Automatic ejectors kick your empties clear for fast reloads, the single selective trigger lets you pick your barrel, and the thumb safety sits right where your hand expects it. Five nickel-coated flush choke tubes come along so you can set the gun up for tight-holding quail one weekend and wild pheasants the next.
Plenty of guns will kill birds. The Artemis does it with a level of craftsmanship that makes it just as at home in a collection as it is in a briar patch, and 28 gauge is arguably the sweetest-handling version of the bunch. Yes. Rizzini scales the Artemis frame to each gauge rather than putting small-bore barrels on a 12 gauge action. That is why the 28 gauge version weighs right around six pounds and swings so quickly, which matters a lot on a long upland walk.
The Artemis ships with five nickel-coated flush-fit choke tubes, so you can tailor patterns from close-flushing quail out to longer pheasant shots. They sit flush with the muzzle to keep the classic look of the barrels intact.
The ornamental scroll on the sideplates is hand finished by Rizzini artisans in Italy, and each gun gets many hours of work before it leaves the factory. The full sideplate design exists specifically to give the engraving more canvas, including the lion detail on the bottom of the action.
It is a field gun first, and the light weight, 29-inch barrels, and automatic ejectors make it a joy on dove, quail, grouse, and pheasant. That said, plenty of owners shoot skeet and sporting clays with theirs, and the single selective trigger and five chokes handle clay games just fine.
