Rock Island built this gas-operated 12 gauge around AR-15 ergonomics, so the safety, charging handle, and general layout all land right where you expect them. The upper and lower receivers are machined from 7075-T6 aluminum, the same alloy used in quality AR builds, which keeps the whole package sturdy without turning it into a boat anchor. Loaded weight sits a little over eight pounds, and between that heft and the soft-shooting gas system, felt recoil is noticeably tamer than you would guess for a 12 gauge.
This version runs a fixed 5+1 magazine setup rather than the detachable box mags found on other VR80 models. The 20 inch contoured barrel wears a fluted shroud and is chambered for both 2-3/4 and 3 inch shells, so everything from light target loads to heavier field ammo is on the menu. Flip-up front and rear sights come installed and fold flat if you would rather run an optic on the receiver rail. The thumbhole stock has an integrated pistol grip and a thick rubber recoil pad that makes longer range sessions a lot more pleasant, and the ambidextrous safety is a nice touch for lefties or anyone training support-side.
Rock Island includes three Mobil-pattern choke tubes, Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, so you can tighten or open your patterns depending on the job. That flexibility makes the VR80 a solid pick for clays, steel targets, home protection duty, or just an afternoon of turning shells into noise. At 40 inches overall it handles quicker than a traditional field gun, and the M-LOK compatible handguard gives you room for a light or sling mount.

The main difference is the magazine setup. This model uses a fixed 5-round magazine with a magazine release block instead of the detachable box magazines found on the standard VR80. To reload, you pop the takedown pin, hinge the upper and lower apart, and load rounds directly into the magazine. Everything else, including the 20 inch barrel, receivers, and gas system, matches the standard gun.
It has a 3 inch chamber and cycles both 2-3/4 and 3 inch 12 gauge shells. Like most gas-operated semi-autos, it tends to run most reliably with loads in the 1200 fps range or hotter, so very light target loads may need a short break-in before they cycle consistently. Birdshot, buckshot, and slugs are all fair game.
