There's something about a case colored receiver on an over/under that just looks right, and the Pointer Acrius delivers that traditional appeal at a price working hunters can live with. Imported by Legacy Sports, this 20 gauge wears genuine Turkish walnut on the stock and forend with cut checkering where your hands land, and the case coloring carries over to the top lever, trigger guard, and forend release for a finished, put-together look.
A 20 gauge over/under is about as pleasant as field guns get, and this one balances nicely between the hands at roughly seven pounds. The 28-inch barrels give you a smooth, deliberate swing on crossing birds without feeling sluggish on a quick flush. The raised ventilated rib and fiber optic front sight get your eye down the barrel fast, and the 3-inch chambers mean you can step up to heavier loads when late-season pheasants or ducks call for it. Chrome-lined bores add durability and make cleanup easier after a long day in the field.
The tang-mounted safety doubles as the barrel selector, so you can choose which barrel fires first depending on the choke you want on that first shot. Mechanical triggers fire the second barrel whether or not the first round goes off, a real advantage over recoil-operated triggers when running light loads. Extractors lift spent hulls clear of the chambers for easy removal by hand, which trap and skeet regulars who save their empties tend to appreciate.
Five Beretta Mobil pattern choke tubes come in the box, from Cylinder all the way to Full, so you can set the gun up for skeet in the morning and tight-flushing roosters in the afternoon. Whether it's a first double gun, a lighter companion to a 12 gauge, or just a good-looking bird gun that won't wear you out on a long walk, the Acrius covers a lot of ground.
The Acrius uses the Beretta Mobil choke pattern, and five tubes come with the gun: Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full. Since Mobil is one of the most common thread patterns out there, aftermarket tubes are easy to find if you want to add specialty chokes down the road.
This model uses extractors, which lift the spent shells partway out of the chambers when you break the action so you can pull them by hand. Ejectors that fling hulls clear are usually found on more expensive doubles. Plenty of clay target folks prefer extractors anyway since the empties stay put instead of landing on the ground.
It's one of the better entry points into double guns. The 20 gauge keeps recoil manageable, the mechanical triggers are crisp for the class, and the tang safety with barrel selector works like the ones on much pricier guns. You get the full over/under experience without a big upfront commitment.
Yes, both barrels are chambered for 3-inch shells, so it will run everything from light 2-3/4 inch target loads up to 3-inch magnum hunting loads. That flexibility makes it practical for clays, doves, upland birds, and waterfowl with the appropriate loads. Just remember to check ammo requirements for nontoxic shot where waterfowl are concerned.
