North American Arms calls the Recluse a swing-out tactical mini-revolver, and that pretty much nails it. This is the classic NAA mini concept grown up a bit, chambered in .22 WMR with a five-round cylinder that swings out for loading and unloading instead of requiring you to pull the cylinder pin like the traditional minis. If you have ever fumbled a reload on an older NAA, you will appreciate that change immediately. At 5.75 inches long and around 8.8 ounces empty, it still disappears into a pocket, which is the whole point.
Two things separate this one from the rest of the mini-revolver crowd. First, the sights. Instead of the tiny bead you would expect on a gun this size, the Recluse wears an XS White Dot setup that is genuinely fast to pick up, even in low light. Second, the grip. The oversized rubber grip has finger grooves and enough real estate that folks with larger hands can get a proper hold, something the birdshead minis never really offered. Add in the shrouded, ported 2-inch barrel that tames muzzle rise, and the snap of .22 Magnum stays very manageable.
Every Recluse is handmade from stainless steel here in the States, so corrosion resistance and long-term durability come standard. It runs as a single action only with a spur trigger, and the halfway notch system lets the hammer rest safely between chambers when it is riding in your pocket. NAA stands behind it with a lifetime warranty, which says a lot about how these little guns are put together.
This is a deep concealment and backup piece through and through. It slips into a pocket, an ankle rig, or anywhere a larger handgun just will not go, and .22 WMR gives it noticeably more authority than the .22 LR minis. It blends the best traits of the Pug and Sidewinder into one package, and it is easily the most practical mini-revolver in the NAA lineup right now.
The biggest upgrade is the swing-out cylinder. Traditional NAA minis require you to remove the cylinder pin and pull the whole cylinder out to reload, while the Recluse swings out like a full-size revolver for much faster loading and unloading. It also adds XS White Dot sights, a shrouded and ported barrel, and a larger rubber grip, blending features from the Pug and Sidewinder models.
More than you would expect for an 8.8 ounce gun. The ported barrel helps knock down muzzle rise, and the oversized rubber grip with finger grooves gives you a real purchase instead of the pinch grip smaller minis require. There is some snap compared to .22 LR, but most folks find it easy to manage with a little range time.
The Recluse uses NAA's halfway notch system, which lets the hammer rest securely in a notch between chambers rather than on a live round. Carried that way, the gun cannot fire if dropped or bumped. Since it is single action only, you cock the hammer for each shot, which adds another layer of deliberate operation.
No, this model is chambered for .22 WMR only and does not ship with a conversion cylinder. NAA offers separate models with .22 LR/.22 Magnum conversion setups if you want that flexibility. Stick with quality .22 WMR loads, and you will find plenty of defensive and varmint options from makers like CCI and Hornady.
