The 22MSCP is North American Arms' magnum-frame mini with a ported 1.125 inch barrel, and it ships with two cylinders: one chambered in 22 WMR and a slightly longer conversion cylinder cut for 22 LR. A 22 WMR out of a gun this light has more bark than you might expect, so NAA cut functional porting into the barrel to vent gas upward and knock down muzzle flip. This is a single-action revolver in the traditional sense, meaning you cock the hammer for every shot. What makes it practical to carry fully loaded is NAA's half-way notch cylinder. Rest the hammer in one of the safety notches between chambers and it sits securely off any cartridge, so a bump or drop is not a concern with all five rounds aboard. The fixed half-moon front sight is simple and snag-free, which suits a gun built for up-close defensive work, hiking pockets, and tackle boxes. The magnum cylinder also runs 22 WMR shotshells, which trail crews and gardeners appreciate for snake duty.
At about 4.6 inches long overall, the 22MSCP hides where nothing else will. Plenty of folks carry one as a deep-concealment backup or a just-in-case gun for the trail, and the two-cylinder setup means it earns its keep at the range too.
It works the same way you load the gun. Pull the base pin, drop the cylinder out of the frame, set the other cylinder in its place, and reinsert the pin. No tools needed, and the included 22 LR conversion cylinder is built slightly longer so it fits the magnum frame correctly.
Yes, as long as you use the half-way notch system. Each cylinder has safety notches cut between the chambers, and resting the hammer in one of those notches keeps it locked away from any live round. Carried that way, the gun cannot fire from a drop or a bump, so there is no need to leave a chamber empty.
The porting vents gas upward at the muzzle to reduce flip when the gun fires. On a revolver this light running 22 WMR, that makes recoil noticeably more manageable and helps you get back on target faster. It is the main difference between this model and the standard non-ported combo.
