There are pocket guns, and then there's the NAA Black Widow. At 8.8 ounces and under six inches long, this little five-shot .22 WMR rides just about anywhere, yet it doesn't handle like the smallest minis in the North American Arms lineup. The oversized black rubber grip, complete with the red hourglass medallion that gives the gun its name, fills the hand with finger grooves along the front strap. That extra real estate takes the jumpiness out of recoil and gives you something real to hold onto, which is exactly what you want in a gun this small.
The Black Widow grew out of NAA's .22 Magnum frame series, and the upgrades are meaningful. The heavy 2" vent barrel adds weight up front for steadier aim and squeezes more velocity out of the .22 WMR cartridge than the shorter minis can manage. A bull cylinder houses five rounds, and the frame, cylinder, and barrel all wear a stainless finish that shrugs off pocket carry and sweat. Marble Arms fixed sights are dovetailed into the barrel and sit low enough to stay snag-free, but they give you a genuine sight picture, a big step up from the simple blade on standard minis.
This is a single-action revolver in the classic NAA style, so you cock the exposed hammer for each shot and load by removing the cylinder. Simple, rugged, and nothing to break. The halfway notches between chambers let the hammer rest securely with all five rounds loaded, a smart bit of engineering that's been part of the NAA design for decades.
Most folks put this gun to work as a deep-concealment backup or a tuck-it-in-your-pocket companion for yard work, fishing trips, and hikes where a full-size handgun stays home. It's also just plain fun at the range. If you want a gun you'll carry every single day because there's zero excuse not to, the Black Widow makes a strong case for itself.
Loading is done by removing the cylinder from the frame. You pull the cylinder pin, drop the cylinder out, load your five rounds, and reinstall it. It takes a little practice to get quick at it, but the design is simple and rugged with very few parts to wear out.
Yes. NAA cylinders have safety notches machined between the chambers, so the hammer can rest in a notch rather than on a live round. When the hammer is properly seated in one of these notches, the revolver can be carried fully loaded without risk of the hammer contacting a cartridge rim.
This specific model (NAA-BWM) is chambered for .22 WMR only, so stick with .22 Magnum ammunition. If you want to run both calibers, NAA offers a convertible version (NAA-BWC) that ships with a second factory-fitted .22 LR cylinder for cheaper practice sessions.
Noticeably better for most people. The oversized rubber grip fills the hand and tames the jumpy recoil feel of the smaller birdshead-grip minis, while the heavy 2" vent barrel and real Marble Arms sights make it easier to put rounds where you want them. It gives up a little in size compared to the standard minis but gains a lot in shootability.
