There are small carry guns, and then there is the North American Arms Mini Revolver. This .22 Magnum version with the folding holster grip is one of the most clever setups NAA makes. The high-strength polymer grip folds knife-style around the bottom of the revolver, completely enclosing the trigger so nothing can snag or press it while it rides in your pocket. When you need it, a push button releases the grip so it swings open and locks into place, giving you a full-size handle on a revolver that measures barely over four and a half inches folded. There is even a clip on the side so it carries like a pocket knife.
North American Arms has been building these little stainless single actions for decades, and the Magnum frame is the one most folks gravitate toward. The .22 WMR round steps up nicely over .22 LR out of the 1.13 inch barrel, and the all stainless steel frame and cylinder shrug off pocket lint, sweat, and years of carry. The half-moon front sight is simple and snag free, and the spur hammer cocks easily for deliberate single action shots. One thoughtful touch worth knowing about: the cylinder has halfway notches between chambers, so the hammer can rest safely between rounds and you can carry all five chambers loaded without worry.
At roughly six ounces loaded up, this is the kind of gun that goes with you on dog walks, fishing trips, and errands where a bigger pistol would get left at home. Yes. NAA machines halfway notches into the cylinder between the chambers, so the hammer can rest securely in a notch rather than on a live round. Combined with the folded grip covering the trigger, this is one of the safer pocket revolver setups you will find. Just follow the loading procedure in the manual to seat the hammer properly.
Not as it ships. This model is chambered for .22 WMR only, and .22 LR should not be fired from the Magnum cylinder. NAA does offer a version of this same revolver with a .22 LR conversion cylinder included (model NAA-22MSC-HG) if you want the option to shoot both.
No, it is single action only, which means you cock the hammer manually for each shot. That is by design on a gun this small, since it keeps the mechanism simple, rugged, and deliberate. It takes a little practice, but the exposed spur hammer is easy to reach and cock with your thumb.
