The MTM Shoulder-Gard SGR30 was built to solve a problem every big-bore hunter knows too well: getting beat up at the bench while sighting in a hard-kicking magnum. Instead of just cradling the front of the rifle like a standard rest, this one works with the whole gun. An integrated recoil-reduction sling straps the buttstock in place, and when the shot breaks that energy gets pulled into a rubber pad, absorbed, and transferred down through the flexible base into the bench. The result is noticeably softer felt recoil and a lot less flinching after a long load-testing session.
The secret is in the 4-point flexible base. It's designed to flex in the middle so it sits dead flat on your bench, and the gripping rubber feet keep it from sliding around when the gun goes off. The trick, per MTM, is to back your shoulder off the buttstock by a half inch to an inch and let the sling do the work. Keep one hand on the forearm with a little downward pressure and you'll usually get your best groups. The sling isn't mandatory either, so lighter-recoiling rifles can skip it entirely.
The front shooting pad is shaped to handle just about anything, from a standard hunting rifle to a high-dollar custom benchgun to an AR. Non-marring rubber pads support nearly any stock or barrel shape, and you won't need to pull your swivel screws to use it, which is a nice touch other brands miss.
