Getting a scope onto a vintage Mauser 98 has always been the tricky part, and this EGW base solves it cleanly. It's a one-piece Picatinny rail cut from domestic 6061 T6 extruded aluminum, finished in matte black Type II anodizing, and built specifically for large ring Mauser 98 receivers. The undrilled version gives you a blank slate to match your receiver's exact hole pattern, which is handy when you're working with older or less-standardized commercial actions.
The full-length Picatinny cross slots run the length of the rail, so you've got real flexibility when positioning rings and dialing in eye relief. That 0 MOA cant keeps your optic flat and neutral, which is the right call for general hunting and range work where you aren't trying to squeeze out extreme long-range elevation. It's ambidextrous, weighs in right around 2 ounces, and sits about .4 inches from the top of the receiver to the top of the rail. The center channel is milled out to shave weight without giving up rigidity, and tying the top of the action together actually helps stiffen things up for better consistency.
Being undrilled, you or your gunsmith will drill and tap to match. EGW lists this base as fitting a long roster of commercial large ring actions including the FN Mauser action, Interarms Mark X, Parker Hale 1200, Santa Barbara Mauser, Zastava M70, Husqvarna 5000, Remington 798, and several JC Higgins and Herter's models. It does not fit the 3000 L or the Mauser M12. Measuring your receiver's hole spacing against the published dimensions before you start is the smart move.
The rail accepts any standard Picatinny or Weaver rings, so you're free to pair it with whatever setup you prefer. EGW includes #6-48 x 1/4 screws and a T-10 bit, and recommends torquing to 20 inch pounds with a drop of blue Loctite to keep everything locked in. The whole thing is machined in the USA on EGW's Fadal machining centers, then tumbled, blasted, and anodized for the long haul.
Undrilled means the mounting holes aren't pre-cut, so you or a gunsmith will drill and tap the rail to line up with your specific receiver's hole spacing. This gives you a precise custom fit, which is useful on older or non-standardized commercial Mauser actions. If you want a base with holes already machined, EGW offers a drilled version as well.
