The Trapper series came out of feedback from Alaskan hunting and fishing guides who wanted a big-bore lever gun short enough to carry all day and quick enough to run when it counts. This 1894 Trapper delivers exactly that. At 33.25 inches overall and right around 6.3 pounds, it rides comfortably in a scabbard, behind a truck seat, or slung through timber, and the .44 Rem Mag chambering gives you plenty of thump on deer and hogs inside 100 yards. It also feeds .44 Special, which makes for a soft-shooting, cheap afternoon of plinking with the family.
Since Ruger took over production in Mayodan, North Carolina, these 1894s have been getting a lot of well-earned praise for fit and finish. The receiver, lever, and trigger guard plate are CNC machined from stainless steel forgings, and the 16.1 inch barrel is cold hammer-forged stainless with a 1:20 twist. The whole works wears a satin finish that shrugs off rain and won't flash in the sun, while the black laminate stock and forend stay dimensionally stable when the weather turns ugly. Checkered grip panels and a soft rubber buttpad round out a rifle that was clearly designed to be used, not babied.
The Skinner Sights setup is a real highlight here. The receiver-mounted adjustable peep pairs with a blade front for fast, natural target acquisition, way quicker than a traditional buckhorn for most eyes. The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24 under a match-polished thread protector, so adding a can or brake is a five-minute job. The oversized loop lever runs smoothly even with gloves on, which matters more than you'd think on a cold morning stand.
The tubular magazine loads through a gate on the receiver and holds 8 rounds of .44 Mag or 9 rounds of .44 Special, giving you 8+1 or 9+1 on tap. A push-button crossbolt safety and traditional half-cock hammer handle the controls. For a woods rifle, camp gun, or just a lever action that does it all in a compact package, this one is tough to beat.
