Description

There's a reason the 1894 has stuck around for well over a century, and this Guide Gun version might be the most practical take on it yet. Chambered for .357 Magnum with the option to run .38 Special, it gives you a rifle that hits plenty hard inside 100 yards on deer and hogs, then lets you plink all afternoon with soft-recoiling .38s. The tubular magazine holds 9 rounds of .357 or 10 rounds of .38, loaded through a traditional gate on the receiver.

Built the Right Way: Inside the New Marlin 1894

Since Ruger took over production, these rifles have earned a reputation for fit and finish that rivals the best of the older JM-stamped guns. The receiver, lever, and trigger guard plate are CNC machined from alloy steel forgings, and the 18.63 inch barrel is cold hammer-forged with a 1:16 twist that stabilizes everything from light .38 wadcutters to heavy .357 hunting loads. The matte blued metalwork is paired with a black laminate straight stock and forend, and laminate is a smart choice here because it shrugs off moisture and temperature swings that can make solid walnut shift. Crisp checkering keeps your grip locked in with wet gloves or bare hands.

A Guide Gun That Earns the Name

At 36 inches overall and 6.2 pounds, this thing is built to be carried more than it's babied. The hooded brass bead front sight and adjustable semi-buckhorn rear get you on target fast in thick cover, and the receiver comes drilled and tapped if you'd rather mount a scope or red dot. A soft rubber buttpad takes the sting out of full-house magnum loads, sling swivel studs come standard, and the offset hammer spur makes cocking easy under glass. A push-button crossbolt safety works alongside the traditional half-cock hammer. Whether it rides in a truck, a saddle scabbard, or over your shoulder on a still hunt, this is a lever gun that pulls its weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Marlin 1894 Guide Gun shoot both .357 Magnum and .38 Special?

Yes, that's one of the biggest draws of this rifle. The tubular magazine holds 9 rounds of .357 Magnum or 10 rounds of .38 Special, loaded through the gate on the receiver. Running .38s makes for cheap, low-recoil practice, while .357 Magnum out of the 18.63 inch barrel picks up serious velocity for hunting and defensive use.

Is the receiver drilled and tapped for a scope or optic?

It is. The 1894 Guide Gun's receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so you can add a rail or scope bases if the iron sights aren't your thing. The offset hammer spur also gives you clearance to cock the hammer with an optic mounted low over the receiver.

Who makes the new Marlin 1894, and how does it compare to the older ones?

These are built by Ruger, which acquired Marlin and restarted production with modern CNC machining and tighter tolerances. Owners who have both regularly report that the fit, finish, and action smoothness on the new guns match or beat the older JM-stamped rifles. The receiver, lever, and trigger guard plate are all machined from alloy steel forgings.

Why a laminate stock instead of walnut?

Laminate is layered and resin-bonded, so it resists swelling and warping from rain, humidity, and temperature swings far better than solid hardwood. That makes it a great fit for a rifle meant to live in the field, on a four wheeler, or behind the truck seat. The black laminate on this one also has crisp checkering that keeps your grip solid in wet conditions.
