Description

The STR takes everything people love about Magpul's CTR and adds a taller, more supportive cheek weld along with real onboard storage. It's a drop-in buttstock built for AR-15 and M4 carbines running mil-spec sized receiver extension tubes, made from reinforced polymer with that signature slim A-frame profile that won't snag on gear or slings. If you run magnified glass and want your eye to land behind the optic the same way every time, the STR's fuller cheek surface earns its keep.

What the STR Brings to Your Buffer Tube

Magpul's supplemental friction-lock system is the heart of this stock. It clamps down on the buffer tube and kills the wobble you get from a bare mil-spec stock, giving you a stable, repeatable platform that holds accuracy whether you're plinking or shooting for groups. A shielded release latch keeps the adjustment lever from getting bumped or snagged, so the stock stays exactly where you set it. Length of pull runs roughly 10.9 inches collapsed out to 14.2 inches extended across six positions, so it fits shooters big and small and works with or without armor.

Storage Built Into the STR

This is where the STR separates itself. Two water-resistant tubes sit on the left and right sides, and each one holds up to two CR123A lithium or AA batteries. They're sealed with a rubber plug and accessible from the rear no matter what position the stock is in, so you've got spares for your optic or light riding along without adding any bulk to your grip. Keep in mind the STR carries a bit more weight than the CTR, right around 12.3 ounces, which is the trade for that extra comfort and capacity.

The rubber butt-pad is a replaceable 0.30-inch piece that grips your shoulder and stays put even against body armor or a plate carrier. Sling options are covered too, with two integral loops and a reversible push-button QD mount that fits up to 1.5-inch swivels. Just remember the buffer tube isn't included, so you'll want a mil-spec extension from Colt, LMT, S&W or similar already on your rifle. Made in the USA.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Magpul STR and the CTR?

The STR is essentially a storage-capable CTR with a taller, more supportive cheek weld. It adds two water-resistant battery tubes on the sides that the CTR doesn't have, which is handy if you run magnified optics or want a better cheek surface. The trade-off is a little extra weight, since the STR runs around 12.3 ounces compared to the lighter CTR.

Does the Magpul STR come with a buffer tube?

No, the buffer tube is not included. The STR is designed to drop onto a mil-spec sized receiver extension tube you already have on your rifle, from makers like Colt, LMT, or Smith & Wesson. If you're building fresh, you'll need to grab a mil-spec extension separately, and make sure it's mil-spec rather than commercial-spec so the stock fits right.

What can I store in the STR's battery tubes?

Each of the two side tubes holds up to two CR123A lithium or two AA batteries, so four batteries total across both sides. The tubes are sealed with a rubber plug for water resistance and open from the rear no matter what position the stock is set to. It's a clean way to carry spares for your optic or weapon light without adding bulk to your grip area.

Will the Magpul STR wobble on my buffer tube?

The STR uses Magpul's supplemental friction-lock system, which clamps against the buffer tube to lock the stock in place and cut out the play you'd feel with a bare mil-spec stock. That gives you a solid, repeatable position that helps with accuracy. Lockup can vary slightly depending on your tube's tolerances, but most folks find it stays put nice and tight.
