The factory stock on a Ruger American gets the job done, but it leaves plenty on the table when it comes to fit and consistency. The Magpul Hunter American stock is the fix. It drops right onto short-action Ruger American rifles with no bedding and no inletting, so you can swap it out at the kitchen table and be back at the range the same afternoon. Built from reinforced polymer wrapped around a Type III hard-anodized, machined cast aluminum bedding block with high-strength steel recoil lugs, it gives the action a solid, repeatable lockup that helps you hold zero shot after shot.
The biggest upgrade here is fit. A stock that matches your body means steadier hold and cleaner trigger presses. Length of pull adjusts from 13 to 15 inches using the included spacers, and the comb comes pre-fitted with a 0.25 inch cheek riser so you can line up behind glass without craning your neck. Optional risers in other heights are available if you run a taller scope. The bedding block also free-floats the barrel, and the channel clears profiles up to a medium Palma contour, roughly 0.92 inch, without any grinding or sanding.
Magpul includes its Bolt Action Magazine Well, which opens the door to AICS-pattern detachable box magazines for .308-based cartridges. Keep in mind the magazine itself is sold separately, and rifles running smaller or larger case heads will want a mag that matches. The forend carries M-LOK slots along the sides and bottom, so bipods, sling hardware, and other gear bolt on clean without adapters clogging up the lines.
At around 3.3 pounds with spacers and the mag well installed, it strikes a nice balance between feeling planted off a rest and still being manageable in the field. It's made in the USA and finished in a subdued OD Green that blends into most hunting environments. For the money, it's one of the easiest ways to make a good rifle feel like it was built for you.
