The spindle valve is one of those small parts that most M1A owners never think about until it's missing or worn. This is the genuine Springfield Armory piece, part number MA0306, machined from steel with a black finish so it matches the rest of your gas system and holds up to heat and pressure cycle after cycle. It fits the full M1A family chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, .308 Winchester, and 6.5 Creedmoor.
This valve lives in the gas cylinder assembly, sitting on the rear barrel ring where it looks like a small screw. Rotating the spindle opens or closes the gas port feeding the cylinder. In normal semi-auto shooting it stays open so the rifle cycles as designed, but the closed position was built for firing barrel-mounted rifle grenades and line-throwing devices, which run on overpressured blanks that would otherwise beat up the action.
