Most lightweight rifles get there by cutting corners. Howa took a different route with the M1500 Super Lite, machining a receiver that is smaller in diameter than a standard short action but sized right for 308 Win length cartridges. It sits between their Mini Action and traditional short action, and the payoff is a bare rifle weight of just 4.7 pounds. Pair that with the Stocky's carbon fiber stock in green with black webbing and you have a rifle that disappears on your shoulder during a long climb, then shows up ready to work when it counts.
The bones here are proven Howa: a push-feed action with dual locking lugs, an M16-style extractor, and a one-piece forged bolt with an integral handle. The 20 inch cold hammer forged barrel wears a 1:10 twist that stabilizes the full range of 308 bullet weights, and the muzzle comes threaded 1/2×28 with a protector so adding a suppressor or brake is a five minute job. Up top, a one-piece Picatinny rail is already in place, so mounting glass takes no extra hardware. The HACT two-stage trigger breaks clean at right around three pounds, and the three-position safety lets you cycle the bolt with the trigger still locked out. Howa rifles carry a sub-MOA guarantee with premium factory ammunition, which says a lot about how confident they are in this barrel.
This is the rifle for the hunter who counts ounces. Whether you are chasing mule deer above the treeline or squeezing into a tight ladder stand for whitetails, the compact 38.75 inch overall length and featherweight build make it easy to maneuver and even easier to carry all day. The flush-fit detachable magazine keeps the profile snag free, and a Limbsaver recoil pad takes the sting out of a light 308, which matters more than you might think at this weight. Howa backs every M1500 with a sub-MOA guarantee of one inch or less at 100 yards using premium factory ammunition. The cold hammer forged barrel and HACT two-stage trigger do a lot of the heavy lifting there. Like any featherweight rifle, it rewards good fundamentals, and many owners find groups tighten up further with a suppressor or brake on the threaded muzzle.
It is more noticeable than a heavy target rifle, but the Limbsaver recoil pad and the carbon fiber stock design take the edge off surprisingly well. For a hunting rifle that gets carried far more than it gets fired, most folks consider the trade well worth it. Adding a suppressor or muzzle brake to the 1/2×28 threads tames it even further.
A one-piece Picatinny rail comes installed from the factory, so all you need is a set of Picatinny rings sized for your scope tube. That keeps setup simple and gives you plenty of flexibility for eye relief. No drilling, tapping, or extra bases required.
