Description

The Lee 90307 is a double cavity mold that drops two .309 diameter, 230-grain round nose bullets per pour. This is the TL309-230-5R design, and if you shoot .300 AAC Blackout, you already know that heavy 230-grain projectiles are the go-to for quiet, subsonic loads through a suppressor. Casting your own means you can crank out a big pile of these without waiting on the next ammo shipment, and the price per bullet drops through the floor once you're feeding your own alloy in.

The blocks are CNC machined from aluminum, which is the whole reason casters keep coming back to Lee. Aluminum heats up and cools down a lot faster than iron or steel, so you can get to good, wrinkle-free bullets after just a few casts instead of babysitting a cold mold. It's also rust resistant and light in the hand, which matters a lot when you're running a long casting session and your arm starts to feel it. The blocks stay aligned and the cavities are cut clean, so bullets come out looking sharp and consistent.

Getting the Most Out of Your Lee .309 230gr Mold

These are deep cavities, so run your pot and mold a touch hotter than you might for a shorter bullet. A lot of casters find they need to push temperatures up to fill the full length cleanly every time, and once things are flowing you can move fast. Expect bullets to drop right around 230 to 231 grains and .309 to .3095 inches depending on your alloy, which is exactly where you want to be for the Blackout.

Tumble Lube and .300 Blackout Notes

The TL in the name stands for tumble lube, meaning these are grooved for the quick liquid-lube-and-shake method instead of a lube-sizer setup. That makes them beginner friendly and fast to load up. Keep in mind these heavy subsonic bullets are meant for fast-twist barrels, which most .300 Blackout rifles already run. Handles and sprue plate are included so you're ready to cast out of the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Lee .309 230gr mold best used for?

This mold is a longtime favorite for casting heavy subsonic .300 AAC Blackout bullets. The 230-grain round nose projectile is right in the sweet spot for quiet, suppressed shooting. It also works for other .30 caliber applications where a heavy cast round nose fits your setup.

Does the Lee 90307 mold come with handles?

Yes, the mold ships with handles and a sprue plate included, so you can start casting right away. You'll still need your own melting pot, alloy, and lube. Gas checks are not included and aren't required for this tumble lube design.

Why does Lee use aluminum instead of steel for the blocks?

Aluminum heats up and cools down much faster than iron or steel, so you get good bullets after just a few casts. It's also rust resistant and lighter, which cuts down on arm fatigue during long sessions. The tradeoff is that you want to keep the mold and pot running hot, especially since these cavities are deep.

What does the TL in TL309-230-5R mean?

TL stands for tumble lube. These bullets are grooved for the fast liquid-lube-and-tumble method rather than a traditional lube-sizer, which makes the whole process simpler and quicker. It's a great fit if you're newer to casting or just want to move a big batch efficiently.
