Description

The Pro Carry HD II is Kimber's take on the Commander-length 1911, and the .38 Super chambering makes it a genuinely uncommon find. While most shooters are used to seeing this platform in .45 ACP or 9mm, the .38 Super brings its own character to the table: it's a higher-pressure cartridge that drives similar-diameter bullets faster than standard 9mm, and it's had a loyal following in USPSA and IPSC competition circles for decades. In a heavy all-stainless pistol like this one, the recoil is very manageable.

The "HD" in the name stands for heavy duty, and that's not marketing fluff. Both the frame and slide are machined from solid stainless steel and finished in a clean satin silver. That's a notable step up from the standard Pro Carry II, which uses an aluminum frame. The extra weight from the steel frame helps absorb felt recoil, keeps the gun planted during fast follow-up shots, and adds to the overall feeling of durability in hand. The tradeoff is a heftier carry weight at 35 oz. empty, but for range use, duty, or anyone who doesn't mind the added mass, it's a worthwhile trade.

At the heart of the pistol is a 4-inch match-grade bushingless bull barrel. This design locks up directly with the slide without the need for a barrel bushing, which eliminates one more variable and contributes to tight, repeatable accuracy. The aluminum match-grade trigger comes factory set to approximately 4 to 5 pounds with very little creep, and the fixed low-profile sights sit in machined dovetails for a clean, snag-resistant profile. Other standard features include a full-length guide rod, an extended beavertail grip safety, and a manual thumb safety for a traditional, confidence-inspiring control setup.

The black synthetic double-diamond checkered grips give you a secure, positive grip without being aggressive on the hand, and the pistol ships with one 9-round magazine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Pro Carry HD II different from the standard Kimber Pro Carry II?

The key difference is the frame material. The standard Pro Carry II uses a lightweight aluminum frame, while the HD version is built with a full stainless steel frame and slide throughout. That heavier steel construction adds durability, improves longevity especially with hot +P-pressure loads like .38 Super, and noticeably reduces felt recoil. It does add weight, coming in at 35 oz. empty versus around 28 oz. for the aluminum-framed version.

Why choose .38 Super over 9mm in a 1911?

The .38 Super is a higher-pressure cartridge that pushes similar-diameter bullets at meaningfully higher velocities than standard 9mm loads, and it has a strong reputation in action shooting sports for its ability to make major power factor in USPSA and IPSC competition. In a heavy stainless pistol like the Pro Carry HD II, the recoil is very controllable. The tradeoff is that .38 Super ammunition is less widely available and typically costs more than 9mm, so it appeals more to enthusiasts and competitors than casual plinkers.

What is a bushingless bull barrel, and does it affect accuracy?

A bushingless bull barrel is a thicker-profile barrel that locks up directly into the slide without requiring a separate barrel bushing. On the Pro Carry HD II, this is a match-grade barrel hand-fitted to tight tolerances. The direct lockup eliminates a potential source of looseness in the system and contributes to consistent, repeatable accuracy. Reviewers of the Pro Carry II platform have consistently noted tight groups in the 2-inch range at 25 yards from a rest.

Is the Kimber Pro Carry HD II a good carry pistol given its weight?

At 35 ounces empty, it's on the heavier end for a 4-inch pistol, and that's something to think about seriously if you plan to carry it all day. That said, the weight does work in your favor at the range and during extended shooting sessions since the steel frame soaks up recoil well. Plenty of people carry all-steel 1911s daily without issue, especially with a quality holster and a good gun belt, but it comes down to personal preference and your typical carry setup.

Does the Pro Carry HD II require a break-in period?

Like most production 1911s, Kimber recommends a break-in period with the Pro Carry platform. Some owners have noted occasional feeding hiccups in the first couple of magazines, which is normal for a tightly-fitted 1911 as components seat in. Running a few hundred rounds of quality ammunition is standard practice before expecting perfect reliability, and most report the pistol running very smoothly after that initial break-in.

What grips and safety features does the Kimber Pro Carry HD II come with?

The pistol ships with black synthetic double-diamond checkered grips that offer a solid grip without being uncomfortable during extended range sessions. For safety, it features the classic 1911 manual thumb safety along with an extended beavertail grip safety. The extended beavertail is a practical upgrade over GI-style grip safeties, giving faster, more positive engagement and helping to prevent hammer bite for shooters with higher grip styles.
