The SU-22CA is Kel-Tec's rimfire take on their SU-16 sport utility platform, and it shares plenty of DNA with its centerfire big brother, including the grip and sight setup. The important part is that this is a ground-up .22 LR rifle, not a conversion bolted onto something else. Inside the polymer receiver you get a 4140 steel bolt riding on steel guide rails, with the recoil spring tucked above the barrel. That simple blowback design keeps the rifle running smoothly through bulk-pack ammo, and at a featherweight 4 pounds unloaded, it carries all day without complaint.
Out of the box, the rear sight adjusts for windage and the front post adjusts for elevation, so you can get zeroed with irons before spending a dime on glass. When you're ready for an optic, the integrated Picatinny rail up top handles red dots, scout scopes, or a compact rimfire scope with no gunsmithing required. The 16.1 inch barrel is threaded 1/2-28 at the muzzle, which opens the door to muzzle devices down the road, and the 1:16 twist stabilizes standard .22 LR loads just fine.
The fixed synthetic stock includes a built-in storage compartment, handy for stashing a spare bolt of cleaning gear or a few odds and ends at the range. The included 26-round semi-transparent magazine lets you see your ammo count at a glance, and the rifle also feeds from Atchisson-pattern AR-22 style magazines, so spares are easy to come by. A crossbolt safety and simple magazine release keep the controls familiar and easy to teach.
