Bullpups have a reputation for two things: mushy triggers and throwing brass at left-handed users. The Kel-Tec RDB Defender was designed to fix both. RDB stands for Rifle, Downward-ejecting Bullpup, and that's the trick here. Spent cases drop straight down through the stock behind the magwell instead of flying out the side, so you can run this rifle from either shoulder without catching hot brass in the face. Pair that with an ambidextrous safety, a mag release that works from both sides, and a reversible charging handle, and you've got a rifle that doesn't care which hand you favor.
The layout is the big selling point. You get a full 16.1 inch barrel with a 1:7 twist, but because the action sits back in the stock, the whole rifle comes in around 27 inches overall. That's shorter than most AR pistols while keeping rifle-length velocity out of your 5.56 loads. The pencil profile barrel and polymer chassis keep weight down to roughly 6.7 pounds, and the balance point sits close to your body, which makes it quick to swing and easy to hold on target. An aluminum M-LOK handguard gives you real estate for lights and accessories, and the full-length Picatinny top rail is ready for whatever optic you want to run since no sights come installed.
The trigger breaks in the 4.5 to 5.5 pound range with a smooth take-up and a clean break, which is genuinely impressive for a bullpup where the linkage usually ruins things. Underneath, an adjustable gas piston system lets you tune the rifle for different ammo or dial it down for suppressed use on the threaded muzzle. Feeding comes from standard AR-15 magazines, so your existing mag supply works fine, and Kel-Tec includes a 20 round Magpul PMAG in the box. For truck gun duty, home defense, or just something different at the range, the Defender is a compact package that punches well above its footprint.
Yes, the RDB Defender feeds from standard AR-15 pattern magazines, so PMAGs, aluminum GI mags, and most other common options will run in it. Kel-Tec includes one 20 round Magpul PMAG with the rifle. If you already own a stack of AR mags, they'll work here without buying anything special.
It is, and that's one of the biggest reasons people pick this rifle. The patented downward ejection drops spent brass through the stock behind the magwell rather than out a side port, so lefties can shoot it comfortably. The safety and mag release work from both sides, and the charging handle is reversible too.
