There aren't many shotguns that can hold 15 rounds of 12 gauge and still come in shorter than a lot of carbines. The Kel-Tec KSG Defender does exactly that. Thanks to the bullpup layout, the action sits behind the trigger, so you get a full 18.5 inch barrel inside a 26.1 inch overall package. At around 6.9 pounds unloaded and only 1.7 inches wide, it moves through doorways and tight hallways the way a defensive shotgun should.
The heart of the KSG platform is its dual magazine tube setup. Run 2.75 inch shells and you're looking at 7 rounds per tube plus one in the chamber, or 6 per side with 3 inch magnums. A manual selector lever lets you switch feeding from one tube to the other on the fly, which means you can stage buckshot in one tube and slugs or less-lethal loads in the other. Loading and ejection both happen through the bottom of the receiver, so the gun runs the same whether you shoulder it left or right.
This isn't a bare-bones KSG. Kel-Tec loaded the Defender up with the accessories most owners end up buying anyway. You get a Magpul RVG vertical grip on the lower rail for positive pump control, Magpul flip-up front and rear sights on the full-length top Picatinny rail, and a Carlson Comp Enforcer up front to tame muzzle rise. A Kydex cheek rest, extended butt pad, aluminum magazine follower kit, and a sling with the KSG-515 mount round out the kit. Everything comes installed or in the box, so it's ready to run the day you pick it up.
Between the capacity, the compact footprint, and the factory upgrades, this is a purpose-built defensive shotgun that doesn't need a trip to the parts counter before it goes to work. The top rail leaves plenty of room for a red dot if you'd rather run optics, and the cylinder bore choke patterns defensive loads exactly how you'd expect. For anyone who wants serious firepower in the smallest practical package, the KSG Defender makes a strong case for itself.
With 2.75 inch shells, each magazine tube holds 7 rounds, giving you 14+1 total with one in the chamber. Running 3 inch magnum shells drops that to 6 per tube for a 12+1 total. Either way, that's a lot of 12 gauge in a gun barely over two feet long.
The core shotgun is the same dual-tube bullpup, but the Defender ships with the popular upgrades already installed. That includes a Magpul RVG vertical grip, Magpul flip-up sights, a Carlson Comp Enforcer compensator, a cheek rest, extended butt pad, aluminum followers, and a sling with mount. Buying those separately for a base KSG adds up fast, so the Defender saves you both money and setup time.
Yes. Both loading and ejection happen through the bottom of the receiver, so there's no brass flying across your face regardless of which shoulder you run it from. The pump and feed selector are easy to reach from either side, making it one of the more genuinely ambidextrous shotguns out there.
