Description

The Kahr P380 (KP3834) is about as small as a serious self-defense pistol gets. Clocking in at just 4.9 inches overall, 3.9 inches tall, and 0.75 inches wide, with an unloaded weight of under 10 ounces, it fits in a front pants pocket without the awkward bulk you get from most semi-autos. It is the kind of pistol that actually gets carried because it does not get in the way.

What sets the P380 apart from other pocket .380s is the level of engineering Kahr put into it. The slide is machined from solid 416R stainless bar stock, and the barrel is a Lothar Walther match-grade polygonal rifled design that delivers tighter tolerances and better performance with hollow point ammo than standard rifled barrels. The polymer frame is reinforced with 4140 steel inserts front and rear for rigidity you would not expect from a gun this size. Kahr's patented Safe Cam action and locked-breech modified Browning-type recoil lug work together to reduce felt recoil noticeably compared to blowback-operated pocket pistols in the same caliber.

The sights are a real highlight. Most pocket guns get milled-in bumps that pass for sights. The P380 gets honest-to-goodness dovetail-mounted, drift-adjustable white bar-dot combat sights. The trigger is Kahr's smooth DAO pull with a consistent rolling break and no external safety to fumble with, which is exactly what you want on a carry gun meant for fast deployment. The slide locks back on the last round, which is another feature plenty of guns in this class skip entirely.

Plan on running at least 200 rounds through it before trusting it as your carry gun. Kahr recommends a formal break-in period, and these pistols run much better once the tight tolerances wear in. Quality brass-cased ammo and a firm grip are your friends here. After break-in, the P380 is a capable, accurate, and very pocketable everyday carry option for anyone who prioritizes minimal footprint without stepping down to a lower-quality gun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Kahr P380 require a break-in period?

Yes, Kahr recommends a 200-round break-in period before relying on the P380 for carry. Like most pistols built to tight tolerances, it tends to run smoother and more reliably once it has some rounds through it. Using quality brass-cased ammunition and maintaining a firm grip during the break-in process will help it settle in faster.

What kind of trigger does the P380 have?

The P380 uses Kahr's DAO (double action only) trigger system, which is striker-fired with a smooth, rolling break and consistent pull weight. There is no external safety and no magazine disconnect, so the trigger is your primary safety mechanism. For a pocket-sized pistol, it is widely regarded as one of the better triggers in its class.

How does the P380 compare to the Kahr CW380?

The P380 and CW380 are very similar in size and function, but the P380 is the premium version. Key differences include the Lothar Walther match-grade barrel with polygonal rifling on the P380, all-steel dovetail-mounted sights (versus pinned sights on the CW380), and laser-engraved slide markings. If you want the best Kahr has to offer in a .380, the P380 is it.

Can the Kahr P380 fit in a pocket holster?

Absolutely. The P380 was designed with pocket carry in mind. At 0.75 inches wide and under 10 ounces, it fits comfortably in a front pants pocket with a proper pocket holster. It is one of the few semi-automatics that truly disappears in a pocket without creating an obvious outline.

What ammo does the Kahr P380 run best with?

The P380 performs best with quality brass-cased ammunition and is particularly reliable with standard-pressure hollow point defensive loads. It can be picky about low-power or steel-cased rounds, especially before the break-in is complete. Brands like Federal, Speer, and Hornady Critical Defense are commonly reported to run well in the P380.
