There are 5.56 pistols, and then there is the Galil ACE. The GAP26 is IWI's Gen II take on a platform that traces its roots back to the original Galil rifle developed by IMI in the late 1960s, itself born from the AK-47 and the Finnish Valmet RK 62. That means a long stroke gas piston running inside a milled steel receiver, the kind of action that keeps cycling when things get dirty, hot, or neglected. It is a fundamentally different animal than the sea of direct impingement AR pistols out there, and you can feel it the first time you run the left-side reciprocating charging handle without breaking your firing grip.
IWI did not just slap a new handguard on the original ACE and call it a day. The Gen II gets a free float M-LOK forend, an updated trigger profile, and a shortened safety lever with a quicker, more positive throw. Up top there is a full length two-piece Picatinny rail, so mounting a red dot or backup irons is painless. Speaking of irons, the GAP26 ships with adjustable sights featuring a tritium front post, which is a nice touch for low light work right out of the box.
The 8.3 inch cold hammer forged, chrome lined barrel with a 1:7 twist stabilizes everything from light varmint loads to heavier 77 grain match ammo, and it is built to shrug off high round counts. Feeding comes from standard AR-15 pattern magazines, so your existing stash of PMAGs and USGI mags drops right in. One 30 round magazine is included to get you started.

The GAP26 in 5.56 NATO feeds from standard AR-15 and M4 pattern magazines, including PMAGs and USGI aluminum mags. That means no hunting down proprietary magazines, and the one 30 rounder in the box is just a starting point. If you already own AR gear, your mag pouch works here too.

The long stroke gas piston runs cleaner and cooler than direct impingement, since combustion gases never vent back into the action. That translates to less frequent cleaning and dependable cycling with cheap or dirty ammo. The trade-off is a bit more weight from the milled steel receiver, but that heft also helps soak up recoil in a short 5.56.
