The rubber is a thermoplastic elastomer that shrugs off the oils and solvents you'll be using on the gun anyway, so it holds up over years of range trips and cleaning sessions.
The magic here is in the shape. Hogue molded in finger grooves and gentle palm swells that naturally guide your hand into a repeatable, locked-in position.
