The VP9A1 X is a new addition to HK's VP9 lineup for 2026, and it fills a specific gap that a lot of people have been asking about. It takes the compact 4.09-inch slide from the VP9A1 K and puts it on the full-size grip frame from the VP9A1 F. The result is a pistol that sits in that sweet spot between compact and full-size: a shorter overall package for better concealment, with a full grip that gives you complete purchase and the control that comes with it.
The A1 upgrades here are real improvements, not just cosmetic. The trigger bar is nickel-Teflon coated for a smoother pull and cleaner break, the ambi paddle magazine release and slide release have both been refined, and the slide now wears front and rear maritime serrations for more confident manipulation in any conditions. The grip frame is fully modular with interchangeable backstraps and side panels covering a wide range of hand sizes, and HK deleted the finger grooves from the original VP9 design for a more universally comfortable front strap. A factory-flared magwell is built into the frame for faster reloads without bolting on an aftermarket piece.
The slide comes optics-ready from the factory with a proprietary HK cut that works with nine available adapter plates, covering most popular red dot footprints including Trijicon, Holosun, EOTech, Leupold, and more. No gunsmithing needed. Standard sights are tritium front and black serrated rear from XS Sights, which work great on their own and can co-witness with the Holosun SCS and similar low-profile optics. The polymer frame includes an integrated Picatinny rail for lights and accessories.
The barrel is cold hammer-forged with polygonal rifling, which is the same standard HK holds across their handgun line. Overall length is 7.34 inches and unloaded weight comes in at 26.56 ounces. This particular configuration ships with two 10-round magazines.
The X is a crossover configuration that combines the compact K-model's 4.09-inch slide with the full-size F-model's grip frame. That means a shorter, more concealable slide with a full grip that accepts flush 17-round and extended 20-round magazines, in addition to the 10-rounders that come with this version. It's a format that a lot of people specifically look for, and HK just introduced it to the VP9 family in 2026.
This optics-ready (OR) model does not include a red dot. The slide is cut from the factory and ready to mount most popular red dots, but you'll need to purchase the correct HK adapter plate for your specific optic's footprint separately. HK offers nine different plates covering brands like Trijicon, Holosun, EOTech, Leupold, and more. If you want a factory-mounted optic, HK also offers optics-equipped (OE) versions of the VP9A1 X that ship with a Holosun SCS or Vortex Defender CCW already installed.
Yes. This configuration ships with two 10-round magazines, but the full-size grip frame accepts standard VP9 series magazines, including 15-round, 17-round, and 20-round options available from HK. The 17-round magazine sits flush with the base of the grip on the full-size frame, and the 20-rounder extends slightly below.
Very. HK's modular grip system uses interchangeable backstraps and side panels that together offer a large number of fit combinations to match different hand sizes and grip preferences. The A1 update also removed the finger grooves from the original VP9 grip, replacing them with a smoother front strap that works better across a wider range of hand sizes. The grip panel inserts ship in the box with the pistol.
The VP9A1 X ships with XS Sights tritium front and blacked-out serrated rear sights. The tritium front vial is visible in low-light conditions without a light source, which is a meaningful upgrade over the photoluminescent sights found on older VP9 models. These sights are standard height, so if you plan to mount a taller optic like a Trijicon SRO or Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, you may want to consider suppressor-height or raised irons for a proper co-witness.
It's a solid choice for people who want full-grip shootability in a more compact package. The shorter 4.09-inch slide is easier to conceal than the full-size F model, and the complete grip means no compromise in control or capacity.
