The G36 has been turning heads since the German Bundeswehr adopted it in 1997, and for years the closest most folks in the States could get was a heavily reworked SL8. This rimfire version changes that. HK teamed up with Umarex of Germany to build a .22 LR rifle that captures the real G36's look and handling, right down to component compatibility with the original handguard, sight rail, and stock. This particular model wears a Flat Dark Earth receiver and folding stock paired with a black 18.13 inch barrel, and it feeds from a 20 round polymer magazine for 20+1 on board.
Under the hood is a straightforward blowback action, which is exactly what you want in a rimfire that gets fed bulk ammo all afternoon. The stock folds to the side just like the service rifle, the safety lever works from either side, and the charging handle can be run left or right handed. Up top you get a carry handle style rail section for mounting a red dot or scope, plus an adjustable rear sight for shooting it the old fashioned way. The muzzle comes threaded 1/2×28 and capped with a flash suppressor, so adding a can or other muzzle device down the road is simple. At around 5.3 pounds, it carries easy and points fast.
This rifle pulls triple duty. As a sub caliber trainer, it lets you practice the manual of arms on the cheap. As a plinker, the 20 round mags keep the fun going, and it shares magazines with the HK416 .22 LR, so spares are easy to track down in 10, 20, and 30 round sizes. And since most original G36 furniture and accessories mount right up, it makes a fantastic base for anyone who has always wanted to build out the iconic German rifle. New shooters, HK collectors, and range regulars all find something to like here.
It's a partnership product. HK teamed up with Umarex of Germany, the same outfit behind the HK416 .22 LR, to build this rimfire version, and HK handles it through their official lineup. The result is licensed, faithful to the original design, and even shares component compatibility with the centerfire G36's handguard, sight rail, and stock.
It ships with one 20-round polymer magazine that follows the STANAG-style well of the centerfire G36. It runs the same mags as the HK416 .22 LR and Walther M4 .22, which are sold in 10, 20, and 30 round versions. The polymer mags also have a loading assist tab that saves your thumbs during long range days.
Yes on both counts. The receiver carries a Picatinny rail section up top for red dots or scopes, and there's an adjustable rear sight if you prefer irons. The 18.13 inch barrel is threaded 1/2×28 under the included flash suppressor, which is the standard rimfire thread pitch, so most .22 cans thread right on.
The stock folds to the right side just like the service rifle, which makes it compact for storage and transport. Like the original G36, the design allows the rifle to be fired with the stock folded. It's one of the details that makes this rimfire feel like the genuine article rather than a lookalike.
