Description

There is something about an octagon barrel on a lever gun that a round barrel just cannot match, and the Heritage 92 Ranch Hand leans into it. This is the full rifle configuration of Heritage's 92 line, meaning you get a 24 inch octagon barrel with the forend attached by a cross screw instead of a barrel band, the way the classic rifles of the 1890s were built. The black polished finish over alloy steel pairs with Brazilian hardwood furniture for a look that would not seem out of place leaning by the door of a ranch house a century ago.

A .44 Magnum That Earns Its Keep

Chambered in .44 Magnum, this Ranch Hand takes real advantage of that long barrel. The extra velocity you pick up over a handgun turns the .44 into a legitimate short to medium range hunting cartridge, plenty capable on deer and hogs in timber country. And when it is time to just relax and burn through a box of .44 Special, the recoil settles right down and this becomes one of the most pleasant plinkers you can shoulder. The full length tube magazine holds 12 rounds plus one in the chamber, so you are not reloading every few minutes either.

Sights and Handling on the R92 Ranch Hand

Up top you get a drift adjustable front sight paired with an adjustable buckhorn rear, a setup that is quick to pick up and easy to dial in for your preferred load. At around 7.4 pounds with a 42.8 inch overall length, the rifle carries some heft out front thanks to that octagon profile, which does a nice job soaking up muzzle rise and steadying your hold on longer shots. A thumb safety rounds out the controls.

Why the Heritage 92 Belongs in the Rack

Built on the proven Model 92 pattern, this rifle runs pistol caliber cartridges through a slick, smooth throwing lever with the kind of reliability that design has been known for since the black powder days. Whether you are into cowboy style shooting, want a woods rifle that shares ammo with your revolver, or just appreciate a good looking lever gun, the Ranch Hand delivers a lot of character for the money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Heritage 92 Ranch Hand shoot .44 Special as well as .44 Magnum?

Yes. Like most lever guns chambered in .44 Magnum, this rifle also runs .44 Special, which is a great option for low recoil practice and casual plinking. Just keep in mind the tube magazine feeds most reliably with flat nose or round flat nose bullets, so stick with ammo designed for lever actions.

Is the 92 Ranch Hand a good deer hunting rifle?

Inside typical woods distances, absolutely. The 24 inch barrel squeezes noticeably more velocity out of the .44 Magnum than a revolver does, making it well suited for deer and hogs out to around 100 yards with good hunting loads. The buckhorn sights are quick to pick up in timber, and the 12+1 capacity is more than you will ever need on a hunt.

What is the difference between this rifle version and the Heritage 92 carbine models?

The rifle configuration, like this one, uses a 24 inch octagon barrel with the forend secured by a cross screw, following the traditional pattern of the original Model 92 rifles. The carbine versions run shorter round barrels with a barrel band holding the forend. The rifle setup adds sight radius, velocity, and magazine capacity, along with that classic octagon barrel look.

Are the sights on the Heritage R92 Ranch Hand adjustable?

Yes. The rear is an adjustable buckhorn that lets you dial in elevation for your load, and the front sight is drift adjustable for windage. It is a simple, traditional setup that suits the rifle and is easy to zero for whatever ammo you settle on.
